Edecrin, also known as ethacrynic acid, is indicated for the following:

  • Treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and renal disease, including the nephrotic syndrome.
  • Short-term management of ascites due to malignancy, idiopathic edema, and lymphedema.
  • Short-term management of hospitalized pediatric patients, other than infants, with congenital heart disease or the nephrotic syndrome.

Do’s

  • Take this medication by mouth after a meal as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once or twice a day.

  • Communicate with your healthcare provider about your progress and any concerns.

Common Side Effects: 

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Stomach upset
  • Mild weakness/tiredness
  • Diarrhea 

Serious Side Effects:

  • Symptoms of dehydration or electrolyte imbalance, such as unusual dry mouth/thirst, unusual decreased urination, muscle cramps/weakness, slow/fast/irregular heartbeat, or confusion.
  • Allergic reactions such as skin rash or itching, blood in the urine or stools, irregular heartbeat, and unusually weak or tired feelings.
