Questran Powder Light (Cholestyramine)

Do’s

• Follow healthcare provider's instructions: Take Questran Light exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, typically 1-2 times a day. The medication comes with a scoop for measuring or in individual packets.
• Mix before taking: Don't ingest the dry powder. Mix Questran Light with at least 2-6 ounces of liquid (water, milk, fruit juice) and stir well. Drink the mixture immediately. Rinse the glass with more liquid and drink that as well to ensure you consume the entire dose. You can also mix it with watery soups, applesauce, or pulpy fruits with juice.
• Maintain good dental hygiene: Avoid holding the mixture in your mouth for extended periods, as it can damage your teeth. Practice regular brushing and flossing.
• Take consistently: Take Questran Light regularly at the same time(s) each day to maximize its benefit.
• Continue even without symptoms: Keep taking Questran Light even if you feel well, as high cholesterol often has no noticeable symptoms.

Don'ts

• Don't take the dry powder: Never take Questran Light in its dry powder form. Always mix it with a liquid before consuming.
• Don't take other medications at the same time: Questran Light can affect the absorption of other medications. Take your other medications as instructed by your healthcare provider, usually at least 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after Questran Light. Consult your healthcare provider for more information.

Common Side Effects:

• Constipation
• Abdominal discomfort or pain
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Flatulence (excessive gas)
• Belching
• Indigestion

Serious Side Effects:

• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing
• Severe or persistent constipation
• Severe or persistent abdominal pain
• Signs of liver problems, including yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or persistent nausea
• Signs of a blockage in the intestines, such as severe stomach pain, bloating, or vomiting

Disclose any allergies to Cholestyramine or any ingredients in Questran Powder Light.

Inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing health problems, particularly constipation, hemorrhoids, or kidney disease.

Be aware if you have diabetes, phenylketonuria (PKU), or need to limit sugar/aspartame intake. Consult your healthcare provider for safe use.

Questran Powder Light may interfere with the absorption of certain vitamins and nutrients. Your healthcare provider may recommend a multivitamin supplement. Discuss this with your healthcare provider.

Inform your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you take (including Questran Powder Light) before any surgery.

Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects, especially constipation.

Questran Powder Light should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary as it may affect nutrient absorption. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

While unlikely to pass into breast milk, Questran Powder Light may affect nutrient absorption in the breastfeeding infant. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
