Livalo (Pitavastatin)

Do's

• Take Livalo orally, with or without food, following your healthcare provider's instructions. It is typically taken once daily. 
• Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you use (prescription, non-prescription, and herbal) to avoid potential interactions.  
• Take Livalo consistently to maximize its effectiveness. Aim to take it at the same time each day.   
• Take Livalo at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after certain cholesterol-lowering medications (bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine or colestipol) to prevent interference with its absorption. 
• Continue taking Livalo even if you feel well. High cholesterol and triglycerides often don't cause noticeable symptoms.  
• Maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine as recommended by your healthcare provider. These lifestyle changes are crucial for managing cholesterol levels.  
• Be patient, as it may take up to 4 weeks to experience the full benefits of Livalo. 

The dosage is individualized based on your specific health condition, response to treatment, and other medications you take. 

Common side effects may include:

• Muscle pain
• Pain in the arms or legs
• Back pain
• Diarrhea
• Constipation
• Headache

Serious side effects:

• Signs of liver problems, such as nausea/vomiting that doesn't stop, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing of the eyes/skin, or dark urine.
• Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
• Muscle problems, such as unexplained muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness, particularly if accompanied by malaise or fever
• Serious liver problems, such as fatigue, loss of appetite, upper belly pain, dark-colored urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes

Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies you have, including allergies to Livalo itself or its inactive ingredients.

Disclose your medical history, particularly regarding liver disease, kidney disease, and alcohol use.

Tell your healthcare provider and dentist about all medications you take, including prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, and herbal products, before undergoing any surgery.

Limit alcohol consumption, as excessive alcohol intake can increase the risk of liver problems, especially when combined with Livalo.

Older adults may be more susceptible to side effects, particularly muscle problems.

Livalo should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary due to potential harm to the unborn baby. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

Breastfeeding is not recommended while using Livalo as it is unknown if the medication passes into breast milk and could potentially harm the infant. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
