Trilipix is indicated for the treatment of high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels. It is a broad-spectrum lipid-lowering medicine that helps reduce cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, which is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis (clogged arteries).

Trilipix should be used as adjunctive therapy to diet to reduce triglycerides in patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia. Additionally, it may be given together with other cholesterol-lowering medications.

Do’s

  • The dosage of Trilipix is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
  • Take Trilipix by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily. Swallow the capsules whole.
  • If you are also taking certain other drugs to lower your cholesterol (bile acid-binding resins such as cholestyramine or colestipol), take Trilipix at least 1 hour before or at least 4 to 6 hours after taking these medications. These medications can bind to Trilipix, preventing your body from fully absorbing the drug.
  • Take Trilipix regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.
  • Keep taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high cholesterol/triglycerides do not feel sick.
  • Continue to follow your healthcare provider's advice about diet and exercise. It may take up to 2 months before you get the full benefit of this medication.

Don’ts

  • Do not crush or chew the capsules, as doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects.
  • Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your cholesterol/triglycerides level will not lower faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.

Common Side Effects:

  • Headache
  • Heartburn (indigestion)
  • Nausea
  • Muscle aches
  • Increases in muscle or liver enzymes that are measured by blood tests

These are not the complete list of potential side effects. Consult a healthcare provider if any concerning symptoms occur while taking Trilipix.

Trilipix is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, including those receiving dialysis, as well as in patients with active liver disease, including those with primary biliary cirrhosis and unexplained persistent liver function abnormalities. It is also contraindicated in patients with preexisting gallbladder disease, nursing mothers, and patients with hypersensitivity to fenofibric acid or fenofibrate.

In rare cases, Trilipix can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Patients should seek medical attention if they experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by fever, unusual tiredness, or dark-colored urine.

Caution should be exercised when oral coumarin anticoagulants are given in conjunction with Trilipix. The dosage of the anticoagulant should be reduced to maintain the PT/INR at the desired level to prevent bleeding complications. Frequent PT/INR determinations are advisable until it has been determined that the PT/INR has stabilized.

Be aware of these warnings and precautions and consult a healthcare provider before taking Trilipix, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment.
