Questran Powder (Cholestyramine)

Do’s

• Take Questran powder exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, typically 1-2 times daily.
• Use the provided scoop to measure the correct dosage and avoid taking the dry powder directly.
• Mix Questran with at least 2-6 ounces of liquid (water, milk, juice) and stir thoroughly. Drink the entire mixture immediately. Rinse the glass with more liquid and drink that as well to ensure you consume the full dose.
• You can also mix Questran with watery soups, applesauce, or pulpy fruits with juice (crushed pineapple, peaches).
• Practice good dental hygiene (brushing and flossing) as Questran can affect your teeth.
• Take Questran regularly at consistent times for optimal benefit. Continue taking it even if you feel well, as high cholesterol often has no symptoms.

Don'ts

• Don't hold the Questran mixture in your mouth for a long time, as it can damage your teeth.
• Don't take other medications within 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after taking Questran, as it may affect their absorption. Discuss this with your healthcare provider for the specific timing of your medications.

Common side effects:

• Constipation
• Stomach or abdominal pain
• Gas
• Nausea
• Loss of appetite
• Bloating
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Belching
• Excessive gas (flatulence)
• Discolored teeth

Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:

• Ongoing or worsening constipation
• Severe stomach pain
• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or swelling
• Signs of a serious allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Questran powder,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Disclose any allergies, especially to cholestyramine.

Inform your healthcare provider about:

• Constipation
• Hemorrhoids
• Kidney disease

Consult your healthcare provider if you have diabetes, PKU, or need to limit these substances in your diet (depending on the specific Questran product).

Questran may hinder the absorption of vitamins (A, D, E, K) and folic acid. Your healthcare provider may recommend a multivitamin.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you use before surgery or any medical procedures.

Older adults may experience more constipation, a side effect of Questran.

Questran should only be used if clearly necessary during pregnancy due to potential nutrient absorption issues. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

Questran is unlikely to pass into breast milk, but it may affect nutrient absorption in the breastfeeding infant. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
