Colestid oral, also known as Colestipol, is used in combination with a proper diet to lower cholesterol levels in the blood.

Lowering cholesterol can help reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Making other lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, weight loss (if overweight), and quitting smoking can also enhance the effectiveness of this medication. Consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

Colestid oral is classified as a bile acid-binding resin. It works by removing bile acid from the body.

In individuals with high cholesterol, this removal of bile acid prompts the liver to produce more bile acid using cholesterol from the blood. This process helps to lower cholesterol levels.

Do’s

  • Take Colestid exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, including dosage, frequency, and how to mix it with liquids. The usual dosage is 1-2 times a day.
  • Stir the mixture thoroughly and drink it right away.
  • Rinse your glass with additional liquid and swallow the rinse to ensure you consume the entire dose.
  • You can also mix Colestid with watery soups, applesauce, or pulpy fruits with juice (like crushed pineapple or peaches).
  • To minimize side effects, your healthcare provider might start you on a low dose and gradually increase it as needed.
  • Take Colestid regularly to experience the full benefits. Try to take it at the same time(s) each day for better adherence.
  • Take other medications as directed by your healthcare provider, typically 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after Colestipol to avoid absorption interference.

Don'ts

  • Don't take the medication in dry powder form. Always mix the granules or packet contents with at least 3 ounces (90 milliliters) of liquid (water, milk, juice, etc.) before drinking.
  • Don't ingest the dry powder form of Colestid.
  • Don't skip doses. Try not to miss any doses. If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
