Prevalite (Cholestyramine) is used in conjunction with a proper diet to lower cholesterol in the blood. The reduction of cholesterol levels helps to decrease the risk of strokes and heart attacks, emphasizing the medication's role in cardiovascular health and risk reduction.

In addition to a proper diet, including a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet, other lifestyle changes such as exercise, weight loss (if overweight), and smoking cessation may help enhance the effectiveness of this medication.

Cholestyramine may also be used to treat itching in individuals with excess bile acid due to a specific type of liver/bile duct disease (partial biliary obstruction). As a bile acid-binding resin, it works by removing bile acid from the body. This removal prompts the liver to produce more bile acid using cholesterol in the blood, ultimately contributing to the reduction of cholesterol levels.

The mechanism of action of Cholestyramine involves the removal of bile acid from the body, which, in people with high cholesterol, stimulates the liver to produce more bile acid by utilizing cholesterol in the blood. This process leads to the lowering of cholesterol levels, highlighting the medication's specific mode of action in addressing elevated cholesterol.

Do’s

  • Take Prevalite exactly as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 1-2 times a day.
