Desowen Cream (Desonide)

Do’s

• Use for external applications only. Desowen is strictly for use on your skin.
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after applying Desowen, unless treating your hands.
• Clean and dry the affected skin area before applying the medication.
• Apply a thin film of Desowen to the affected area and rub it gently as directed by your healthcare provider. The usual frequency is 2-3 times daily for cream or lotion, and 2 times daily for gel.
• Avoid bandaging, wrapping, or covering the treated area unless your healthcare provider instructs you otherwise.
• Be careful when applying Desowen near the eyes. Avoid getting it in your eyes, as it can worsen glaucoma or cause irritation. Rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
• Use for prescribed conditions only. Use Desowen only for the skin condition your healthcare provider prescribed it for.
• Tell your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve or worsens after 2 weeks of treatment.

Don'ts

• Don't use tight-fitting diapers (infants). If using Desowen on an infant's diaper area, don't use tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants.
• Don't exceed the prescribed dosage. Don't apply more Desowen or use it more often than prescribed by your healthcare provider.
• Don't discontinue abruptly. Talk to your healthcare provider before stopping Desowen treatment.
• Don't get Desowen in your nose or mouth. Rinse with water if accidental contact happens.

Common Side Effects:

• Burning
• Stinging
• Itching
• Irritation
• Dryness
• Peeling
• Redness when first applied to the skin

Serious Side Effects:

• Worsening of the skin condition
• Redness, warmth, swelling, oozing, or severe irritation of any treated skin
• Blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Desowen cream,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider of any allergies you have, including allergies to desonide, other corticosteroids, or any of the medication's ingredients.

Tell your healthcare provider about any pre-existing health problems, especially:

• Poor blood circulation
• Diabetes
• Immune system problems
• Certain skin conditions (rosacea, perioral dermatitis)

Avoid using DesOwen Cream in areas with infections or sores.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including DesOwen Cream, before any surgery.

Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of DesOwen Cream. Consult your healthcare provider for more details.

Discuss the risks and benefits of using DesOwen Cream with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant.

It is unknown if DesOwen Cream passes into breast milk when applied to the skin. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding. If you are using DesOwen Cream while breastfeeding, avoid applying it to the breast/nipple area.

DesOwen Cream may interact with other medications you take. Tell your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you use before starting DesOwen Cream.
