Azelex Cream (Azelaic Acid)

Do’s

• Before using Azelex Cream, clean the affected area and pat it dry. 
• The medication should be applied to the skin as directed by a healthcare provider, usually twice daily (in the morning and evening). A thin layer should be applied and gently massaged into the affected areas. 
• Wash hands after use and use the medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help remember, it should be used at the same times each day. 
• The medication should be used for the full course of treatment as directed by a healthcare provider, and it usually takes about 1 month to see an improvement, although the full effects of treatment may take longer. 
• If the condition does not improve after 1 month or worsens, inform the healthcare provider.

Don’ts

• Contact with the eyes, nose, and mouth should be avoided, and if the medication gets into any of these areas, it should be washed away immediately with plenty of water. 
• A bandage or cover should not be placed over the cream unless directed by a healthcare provider.
• Do not use large amounts of the medication or apply it more often than directed, as this will not improve the condition any faster and may increase the risk of side effects. 

Common Side Effects:

• Pruritus
• Burning
• Stinging
• Tingling
• Erythema
• Dryness
• Rash
• Peeling
• Irritation
• Dermatitis
• Contact dermatitis 

These common side effects are generally mild and transient in nature.

Serious Side Effects:

• Sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights
• Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in the chest, shortness of breath, sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out

If any of these serious side effects occur, seek medical help immediately.

Other Potential Side Effects:

• Lightening of skin color (hypopigmentation), which may be more noticeable in people with dark skin color
• Worsening of asthma symptoms, such as shortness of breath and wheezing, is a rare but serious side effect that should be reported to a healthcare provider

The side effects of Azelex Cream usually lessen as the body adjusts to the medication. However, if any side effects persist or worsen, seek medical advice.

There is the potential for experiencing allergic reactions with the use of Azelex Cream.

Azelex Cream is contraindicated in individuals who have shown hypersensitivity to any of its components.

There have been isolated reports of hypopigmentation after the use of azelaic acid. Since azelaic acid has not been well studied in patients with dark complexions, these patients should be monitored for early signs of hypopigmentation.

Azelex Cream is for dermatologic use only and not for ophthalmic use.

If sensitivity or severe irritation develops with the use of Azelex Cream, treatment should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted.

Store Azelex Cream at room temperature. Do not freeze. Keep all medications away from children and pets. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed.
