Hygroton (Chlorthalidone)

Do’s

Take this medication by mouth with food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily in the morning. 

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. 

Keep taking this medication even if you feel well.

If you also take certain drugs to lower your cholesterol, take Hygroton at least 2 hours before or at least 4 hours after these medications.

Follow all directions given to you by your healthcare provider carefully. If you do not understand the instructions on the label, ask your healthcare provider for help.

Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse, such as if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase.

Don’ts

Avoid taking this medication within 4 hours of your bedtime to avoid having to get up to urinate.

Common Side Effects:

Dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness as the body adjusts to the medication 

Serious Side Effects:

Severe dizziness

Fainting

Signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine)

Muscle cramps or weakness

Confusion

Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea

Signs of an electrolyte imbalance (e.g., dry mouth, increased thirst, lack of energy, or muscle pain)

Seek immediate medical attention if any of the listed serious side effects occur.

Before taking any medication, including Hygroton, consult a healthcare provider to ensure that the medication is safe, appropriate, and effective for your specific medical condition.

Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as Hygroton may affect your baby during pregnancy and at birth, and the active ingredient in Hygroton passes into breast milk.

Certain drugs may interact with Hygroton. Discuss potential interactions with your healthcare provider and inform them about any other medications or supplements you are currently taking. This includes prescribed and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and dietary or herbal supplements.

Elderly patients may require special precautions when taking Hygroton. Close medical observation, including monitoring of serum electrolytes, is essential when treating elderly patients with Hygroton.
