Risperdal, also known as risperidone, is indicated for the treatment of various mental/mood disorders. It is commonly prescribed for the following conditions:

  1. Schizophrenia: Risperdal is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and adolescents aged 13-17 years.

Do’s

  • Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once or twice daily.
  • If you are using the liquid form of this medication, carefully measure the dose using the special measuring device provided. If directed, you may mix the measured dose with a small amount of liquid (3 to 4 ounces/about 100 milliliters) such as water, coffee, orange juice, or low-fat milk. Take all of the mixture right away.
  • The dosage is based on your age, medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Your healthcare provider may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose to reduce the risk of side effects.
  • Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day. Keep taking this medication even if you feel well.
  • Consult your healthcare provider if your condition lasts or gets worse. Also, make sure to inform them about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.

Don’ts

  • Do not use a household spoon when measuring the liquid form because you may not get the correct dose.
  • Do not mix the liquid medicine with cola or tea. 
  • Do not prepare a supply of liquid mixture in advance.
  • Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your healthcare provider.

Risperdal M-TAB Orally Disintegrating Tablets contain phenylalanine, which is a component of aspartame. Be mindful of the phenylalanine content in the tablets, especially for individuals with phenylketonuria.

Treatment with Risperdal can be associated with hyperglycemia, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and weight gain. Patients and caregivers should be informed about these potential metabolic changes.

There is a risk of tardive dyskinesia associated with Risperdal. Patients and caregivers should be informed about this risk.

Risperdal is not approved for use in older adults with dementia-related psychosis. Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death.

Keep all appointments with the healthcare providers and the laboratory while taking Risperdal. Additionally, patients should maintain a written list of all prescription and nonprescription medicines they are taking and bring this list to each healthcare provider's visit or hospital admission.
