Relafen, also known as nabumetone, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and inflammation caused by various conditions. It is indicated for:

  1. Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis: Relafen is commonly prescribed for the relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  2. Musculoskeletal Conditions: It is also used to treat musculoskeletal conditions such as sprains, strains, and other injuries.
  3. Other Conditions: Additionally, Relafen may be prescribed for other conditions involving pain and inflammation, as determined by a healthcare provider.

Do’s

  • Start by reading the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before using Relafen and consult it each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider for clarification
  • Take this medication by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once or twice daily with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters).
  • To prevent stomach upset, take Relafen with food, milk, or an antacid
  • The dosage of Relafen is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Follow the prescribed dosage to minimize side effect risks such as stomach bleeding. Use the medication at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible length of time
  • For chronic conditions such as arthritis, continue taking Relafen as directed by your healthcare provider and discuss the risks and benefits with them.
  • In certain conditions such as arthritis, it may take up to 2 weeks of regular intake before the full benefits of the drug are noticed.
  • If you are taking this medication on an "as needed" basis (not on a regular schedule), remember that pain medications work best if they are used as the first signs of pain occur. Waiting until the pain has worsened may result in the medication not working as effectively.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if your condition worsens while taking Relafen

Don’t

  • Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking the medication.
  • Do not increase your dose or take this medication more often than prescribed.

Older adults may be at higher risk for this effect. Be mindful of any signs of bleeding and seek medical attention if necessary.

Inform your healthcare provider about any history of liver or kidney problems, as Relafen can affect these organs. Monitoring of liver and kidney function may be necessary during treatment.
