Warning & Dosage

Prandin Mechanism of Action

Repaglinide increases the pancreas’ insulin production, decreasing blood sugar levels. The pancreatic islets’ functioning beta (ß) cells are necessary for this action. Low glucose concentrations result in decreased insulin release, which is glucose-dependent.

Prandin Dosage and Directions

Usual Adult Dose for Type 2 Diabetes:

Preventatively administer 2, 3, or 4 times each day.

-For patients who have never had antidiabetic medication or whose glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level is under 8%:

Starting dose: 0.5 mg taken orally before each meal.

-For individuals who have previously received antidiabetic medication or whose HbA1c is 8% or higher:

Initially, take 1 or 2 milligrams with each meal.

  • In order to get a good glycemic response, the pre-prandial dose should be doubled up to a maximum mealtime dose of 4 mg. After each dose change, at least one week should pass before reevaluating the response.
  • Range of suggested doses: 0.5 to 4 mg taken orally with each meal
  • The maximum daily dose is 16 mg.

  • While postprandial glucose levels may be employed in individuals whose pre-meal blood glucose levels are satisfactory but whose overall glycemic control (HbA1c) is poor, fasting blood glucose concentrations are typically used to alter dosing.
  • The dose of this medication should be decreased in patients who experience hypoglycemia while using it in conjunction with thiazolidinedione or metformin.
  • Prandin 2 mg, 1 mg, and 0.5 mg are available here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Prandin and Metformin?

Prandin and Metformin are used to treat type 2 diabetes, but they work differently in the body. Metformin is a biguanide medication that decreases the amount of sugar produced by the liver and helps the body use insulin better.

One dose per day is typically given, either with or without food. Prandin is a sulfonylurea drug that stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin. It is usually taken twice a day, with food.

Metformin is often the first medication for type 2 diabetes because it is effective and has few side effects. Prandin may be prescribed if metformin does not control blood sugar levels adequately. Both medications can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), so people taking either drug should monitor their blood sugar levels regularly.

How does Prandin work?

It works by increasing the amount of insulin released from the pancreas, lowering blood sugar levels.

How long does it take for Prandin (repaglinide) to work?

As soon as Repaglinide is taken, it begins to work within 30 minutes to an hour. The effect lasts for several hours.
