Metaglip is a combination of two oral diabetes medicines, glipizide and metformin, that help control blood sugar levels. It is used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. However, it is not indicated for treating type 1 diabetes.

Do’s

  • Read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before starting to use Metaglip and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
  • Take Metaglip by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once or twice a day. Take it with meals to help minimize any stomach upset and drink plenty of fluids unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider.
  • The dosage of Metaglip is determined based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Inform your healthcare provider about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
  • Your healthcare provider may direct you to start Metaglip at a low dose and gradually increase it to reduce the risk of side effects, such as upset stomach. Follow their instructions carefully when starting this medication.
  • If you are already taking another diabetes drug, such as chlorpropamide, follow your healthcare provider's directions carefully for stopping the old drug and starting Metaglip.
  • Colesevelam can decrease the absorption of glipizide, which is one of the components of Metaglip. If you are taking colesevelam, take Metaglip at least 4 hours before taking colesevelam.
  • Use Metaglip regularly to get the most benefit from it. Take it at the same time(s) each day to help establish a routine.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition lasts or gets worse, such as experiencing high or low blood sugar levels. It may take up to 2 weeks before the full benefit of Metaglip takes effect.

Common Side Effects:

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness

Consult with your healthcare provider if you experience any side effects while taking Metaglip. They can provide guidance and determine the best course of action.

Before taking any medication, including Metaglip, consult with a healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice and determine if Metaglip is safe, appropriate, and effective for you.

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding the use of Metaglip. Controlling diabetes is important during pregnancy, but you may need to stop taking Metaglip for a short time just before your due date.

Metaglip is contraindicated in patients with renal disease or dysfunction, as indicated by abnormal creatinine clearance or serum creatinine levels. Discuss your medical history, including any kidney-related issues, with your healthcare provider before starting Metaglip.

Patients taking Metaglip should be aware of the symptoms of lactic acidosis, a rare but serious side effect associated with metformin therapy. If unexplained hyperventilation, myalgia, malaise, unusual somnolence, or other nonspecific symptoms occur, discontinue Metaglip immediately and notify your healthcare provider.
