Biaxin (clarithromycin) is indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible isolates. The specific indications for Biaxin include:

  1. Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: Biaxin is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible isolates due to Streptococcus pyogenes as an alternative in individuals who cannot use first-line therapy.
  2. Uncomplicated Skin And Skin Structure Infections: Biaxin is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible isolates due to Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes.
  3. Acute Otitis Media: In pediatric patients, Biaxin is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible isolates due to Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pneumoniae.
  4. Treatment And Prophylaxis Of Disseminated Mycobacterial Infections: Biaxin is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible isolates due to Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenza, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pneumoniae.
  5. Other Uses: Biaxin is also used for the treatment of bacterial endocarditis prophylaxis, Helicobacter pylori infection, Legionella pneumonia, Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare (both treatment and prophylaxis), Mycoplasma pneumonia, sinusitis, bronchitis, pertussis prophylaxis, and pertussis.

Do's

  • Take Biaxin tablet by mouth with or without food every 12 hours. If stomach upset occurs, you may take it with food or milk. 
  • Swallow the Biaxin XL tablet whole, usually once daily. 
  • Take the antibiotic at evenly spaced times for the best effect. 
  • Take Biaxin at the same time(s) every day to help you remember. 
  • Continue taking the medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear if you are using this medication to treat an infection. Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection 
  • Take Biaxin exactly as directed by your healthcare provider if using it to prevent certain bacterial infections.

The dosage and length of treatment of Biaxin are based on your medical condition and response to treatment. In children, the dosage may also be based on weight.
