Glyset (Miglitol)

Do's

• Take Glyset exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually 3 times a day with the first bite of a meal.
• Take Glyset consistently to manage your blood sugar effectively. Aim to take it at the same time each day.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your blood sugar is not controlled (too high or too low). They may need to adjust your Glyset dosage or treatment plan.

Don'ts

• Don't take more Glyset than prescribed or take it more often than directed.
• Don't skip or delay your Glyset dose unless instructed by your healthcare provider.
• Don't take Glyset without food as it can cause low blood sugar. Take it with the first bite of your meal.
• Don't abruptly stop taking Glyset without consulting your healthcare provider. This can cause blood sugar spikes.

Common Side Effects:

• Gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and flatulence
• Skin rash
• Low serum iron (may occur more often in patients treated with Glyset)
• Mild gastrointestinal upset
• Vaginal discomfort/itching/discharge

Serious Side Effects:

• Serious allergic reactions, although rare, may include rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing
• Diarrhea c
• Constipation
• Blood/mucus in stool
• Chills
• Cold sweats
• Blurred vision
• Dizziness
• Drowsiness
• Shaking
• Rapid heart rate
• Weakness
• Headache
• Fainting
• Tingling of the hands or feet
• Hunger

Talk to your healthcare provider before taking Glyset if you have any allergies or a history of certain medical conditions, especially bowel problems, kidney problems, or are planning surgery.

Glyset can cause side effects like blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness. Avoid activities requiring alertness until you know how Glyset affects you.

Alcohol can worsen low blood sugar risks with Glyset. Limit alcohol consumption.

Stress can affect blood sugar control. Talk to your healthcare provider if you experience stress as your medication dosage might need adjustment.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including herbal products, before any surgery or dental procedure.

Glyset should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

Pregnancy can affect blood sugar control. Talk to your healthcare provider about managing your diabetes during pregnancy, which might involve changes in medication.

Glyset passes into breast milk in small amounts but is unlikely to cause harm. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
