Tradjenta (generic name: linagliptin) is indicated for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar levels. Tradjenta may be used as monotherapy or in combination with other common antidiabetic medications including metformin, sulfonylurea, pioglitazone, or insulin.

  • Before starting Tradjenta and each time you get a refill, read the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, consult your healthcare provider.
  • Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily. The dosage is determined based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking.
  • Take this medication regularly to derive the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. Carefully follow the medication treatment plan, meal plan, and exercise program recommended by your healthcare provider
  • Regularly check your blood sugar as directed by your healthcare provider. Keep track of the results and share them with your healthcare provider, as blood sugar measurements that are too high or too low may require dosage/treatment adjustment.

  • Severe or ongoing joint pain

Consulting a healthcare provider before starting Tradjenta or any new medication, changing a diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment is recommended.

The risk of hypoglycemia is increased when linagliptin is used in combination with an insulin secretagogue (e.g., sulfonylurea) or insulin. Coadministration of Tradjenta with these medications may require lower doses of the insulin secretagogue or insulin to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia.

Acute pancreatitis, including fatal cases, has been reported in patients treated with Tradjenta. Promptly discontinue Tradjenta and contact a healthcare provider if persistent severe abdominal pain occurs, as this may be a symptom of acute pancreatitis.

Tradjenta has not been studied in patients with a history of pancreatitis, and it is unknown whether such patients are at an increased risk for the development of pancreatitis while using Tradjenta.

Inform the healthcare provider about any history of heart problems, kidney disease, high triglycerides, gallstones, or alcoholism before using Tradjenta.
