Synjardy is an oral medication that combines empagliflozin (an SGLT2 inhibitor) and metformin (a biguanide). It is indicated for the following purposes:

  • Used along with a healthy diet and exercise to treat Type 2 diabetes.
  • It can help lower the risk of death and hospitalization from heart problems in certain adults with Type 2 diabetes.

Do’s

  • Before starting to take Synjardy, read the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, consult your healthcare provider.
  • Take Synjardy by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually twice daily with meals. The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Inform your healthcare provider about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
  • To reduce the risk of side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, your healthcare provider may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow their instructions carefully.
  • Taking Synjardy regularly at the same time each day can help you get the most benefit from it.
  • If your condition does not improve or worsens (e.g., if your blood sugar is too high or too low), inform your healthcare provider.
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Genital Yeast Infections
  • Cold Symptoms
  • Metformin-Associated Lactic Acidosis is characterized by symptoms such as weakness, stomach pain, unusual muscle pain, sleepiness, trouble breathing, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, slow heart rate, or irregular heartbeat.

There may be other side effects not listed here. Consult your healthcare provider for comprehensive information.

Before taking Synjardy or making any changes to your medication or diet, consult a healthcare provider to ensure that the use of the medication is safe, appropriate, and effective for your specific medical condition and circumstances.

If metformin-associated lactic acidosis is suspected, immediate discontinuation of Synjardy and the institution of general supportive measures in a hospital setting is recommended. Prompt hemodialysis may also be necessary.

Synjardy is not recommended for use in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, as it may increase the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis in these patients. Additionally, it is contraindicated in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) less than 30 mL/min/1.73 m² or in patients on dialysis.

Synjardy should be discontinued at the time of, or prior to, an iodinated contrast imaging procedure in patients with an eGFR less than 60 mL/min/1.73 m², in patients with a history of liver disease, alcoholism, or heart failure, or in patients who will be administered intra-arterial iodinated contrast. Renal function should be assessed before initiating Synjardy and as clinically indicated. Additionally, volume status should be assessed, and in patients with volume depletion, this condition should be corrected before initiating Synjardy.

Individuals with a known allergy to Synjardy or any of its ingredients should avoid taking this medication.

Synjardy should be stored at room temperature (77°F/25°C).
