Diabeta (Glyburide)

Do’s

• Read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by the pharmacist before starting to take Diabeta, and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
• Take Diabeta by mouth with breakfast or the first main meal of the day as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily. In some cases, especially for those taking higher doses, patients may be directed to take the medication twice a day. The dosage is based on the individual's medical condition and response to treatment.
• To reduce the risk of side effects, the healthcare provider may direct to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase the dose. Follow their instructions carefully.
• If you are already taking another diabetes drug, such as chlorpropamide, follow your healthcare provider's directions carefully for stopping the old drug and starting Diabeta.
• If you are also taking colesevelam, take Diabeta at least 4 hours before colesevelam.
• Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help remember, use it at the same time(s) each day.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or if it worsens, such as if your blood sugar is too high or too low.

Don’t

• Diabeta comes in different types of tablets that provide different amounts of the medication. Do not switch between different forms or brands of this medication unless directed by your healthcare provider.

• Difficulty with swallowing
• Dizziness
• Fast heartbeat
• Hives
• Itching
• Skin rash
• Puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue,
• Tightness in the chest
• Trouble breathing
• Unusual tiredness or weakness

Diabeta can lower blood sugar levels, leading to hypoglycemia, which can be dangerous. Monitor blood sugar levels closely while taking this medication and be aware of the symptoms of low blood sugar.

Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to Diabeta. If you notice symptoms such as rash, itching, or swelling, seek medical attention immediately.

Consult a healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as the use of Diabeta during these periods may have implications for both the mother and the baby.

Individuals with impaired liver or kidney function should use Diabeta with caution, as the medication's effects may be potentiated in these cases. Regular monitoring and dosage adjustments may be necessary.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, and medical conditions before starting Diabeta, as interactions and contraindications may exist.

Lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise, and weight management, are important components of diabetes management and should be integrated with the use of Diabeta.
