Bactroban Nasal Ointment (Mupirocin)

Do’s

• Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start using Bactroban Nasal Ointment and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
• Wash your hands before and after using this medication. Use it as directed by your healthcare provider, usually twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening).
• Apply half of the ointment from the tube into one nostril and the other half into the other nostril.
• Gently squeeze your nostrils together and release, then repeat this for about 1 minute to spread the ointment inside your nose.
• Throw away the tube after you have used it in both nostrils. 
• Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Use this medication at evenly spaced intervals.
• Continue to use Bactroban Nasal Ointment for the full time prescribed. Stopping it too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow.

Don’ts

• Do not re-use the used tube.
• Do not use this medication with any other nasal products.

Common Side Effects:

• Burning, stinging, itching, pain, headache, runny nose, congestion, sore throat, distorted sense of taste, cough, and itching.

Rarely, Serious Side Effects:

• Signs of anaphylaxis like trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using the medication and see your healthcare provider immediately if you experience the serious side effects listed above.

Allergic Reactions:

• Allergic reactions such as a rash, hives, or swelling can also occur but are less common. Seek medical attention if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction.

Occasionally, the ointment can cause itching or tingling when first used, but this usually passes.

Be sure to consult your healthcare provider about the potential side effects of Bactroban Nasal Ointment. Report any side effects you experience to your healthcare provider right away.

Bactroban Nasal Ointment may cause systemic allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, urticaria, angioedema, and generalized rash. If you have an allergy to mupirocin or any other part of Bactroban Nasal Ointment, or if you are allergic to any other drugs, foods, or substances, inform your healthcare provider about the allergy and any signs you had.

Avoid contact with the eyes when using Bactroban Nasal Ointment. In case of accidental contact, it should be rinsed well with water. Application of Bactroban Nasal Ointment to the eye under testing conditions has caused severe symptoms such as burning and tearing. If sensitization or severe local irritation occurs, usage should be discontinued.

Some products, such as other nasal products, may interact with Bactroban Nasal Ointment. Consult a healthcare provider to understand potential interactions with other drugs or health problems.
