Leucovorin
(Calcium Folinate)

Leucovorin is a prescription medication that is essentially folic acid. Folic acid can be consumed naturally by eating certain foods including oranges, dried beans, peas, and spinach. Folic acid aids the body in producing and maintaining new cells and additionally helps to prevent changes in DNA that may lead to cancer. Leucovorin is used to reduce the side effects of large amounts of medication or accidental overdose of medications that reduce the effects of folic acid within the body. Leucovorin is also used to treat anemia that has occurred as a result of chemotherapy.

Leucovorin should be stored at room temperature in an area that is protected from moisture, heat, and light.

Before taking Leucovorin, notify your doctor if any of the following apply to you: you have kidney disease; you have lung disease; you have allergies to any type of drug; you have liver disease; or if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications including fluorouracil (Adrucil), phenytoin ( Dilantin </a >), fosphenytoin (Cerebyx), ethotoin (Peganone), phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton), or primidone (Mysoline).

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, notify your doctor, as this medication may cause harm to an unborn child.

Patient Family Information: Take Leucovorin exactly as prescribed. When taking Leucovorin, follow the directions on your prescription label. Leucovorin is generally taken with a full glass of water. IV fluids may also be incorporated into your treatment plan along with Leucovorin to ensure that you remain hydrated.

Do not take Leucovorin if you are allergic to any of its contents. If you have anemia that is caused by a lack of vitamin B12, do not take Leucovorin.

Sever Side Effects : Severe side effects include symptoms of an allergic reaction.

If you experience any other side effects after taking Leucovorin, notify your doctor.
