Strattera (atomoxetine) is indicated for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and, to a lesser extent, cognitive disengagement syndrome. It may be used alone or along with psychostimulants. Additionally, it is used as a cognitive and executive functioning enhancer to improve self-motivation, persistence, attention, inhibition, and working memory.

Do's

  • Before starting or refilling a prescription for Strattera, read the Medication Guide provided by the pharmacist. If there are any questions, consult a healthcare provider for clarification.
  • The dosage of Strattera is determined based on the individual's medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications being taken.
  • Strattera is usually taken once or twice a day, as directed by the healthcare provider. The first dose is typically taken in the morning, and if a second dose is prescribed, it should be taken in the late afternoon or early evening. Taking Strattera late in the day may lead to trouble sleeping (insomnia).
  • The capsules should be swallowed whole with water or other liquids. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsules. If a capsule is accidentally opened or broken, contact with the powder should be avoided, and any loose powder should be washed away with water. If the powder gets in the eyes, they should be rinsed with water immediately, and a healthcare provider should be contacted.
  • If a dose of Strattera is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered. However, if it's almost time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped, and the next dose should be taken at the usual time. Taking two doses at once should be avoided.
  • Using Strattera regularly is important to obtain the most benefit from it. Taking it at the same time(s) each day can help in remembering to take the medication.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if the condition does not improve or worsens. Additionally, from time to time, your healthcare provider may stop Strattera treatment to check ADHD symptoms.

Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Upset stomach
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Mood changes
  • Insomnia
  • Feeling tired
  • Increased sweating
  • Urination problems
  • Impotence or trouble having an erection

Less Common Side Effects:

  • Suicide-related behavior (suicide attempts, suicidal ideation)
  • Psychotic/manic symptoms (e.g., hallucinations, delusional thinking, mania)
  • Restlessness
  • Emotional lability
  • Generalized anxiety disorder

Any bothersome or persistent side effects and any health changes not listed should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Strattera may increase the risk of suicidal thinking, especially in children and adolescents. Closely monitor for any signs of suicidal thoughts or behavior, especially at the beginning of treatment or after any dosage adjustments.

There is a possibility that Strattera may exacerbate pre-existing psychotic or manic symptoms. Patients with a history of depression, mental illness, or bipolar disorder should be closely monitored for any unusual thoughts or behavior.

Strattera generally should not be used in individuals with known serious structural cardiac abnormalities, cardiomyopathy, serious heart rhythm abnormalities, or other serious cardiac problems that may place them at increased vulnerability to its noradrenergic effects. Special care should be taken in treating ADHD in patients with comorbid bipolar disorder due to the concern for possible induction of a mixed/manic episode.

Very rarely, reports of liver injury, including elevated hepatic enzymes and bilirubin with jaundice, have been associated with Strattera. If symptoms of liver injury occur, discontinuation of treatment should be considered.

Prolonged use of Strattera may affect a child's growth rate, weight, and final adult height. Regular monitoring of weight and height is recommended, and the healthcare may occasionally recommend stopping the medication briefly to reduce the risk.

Inform the healthcare provider about all medications being taken, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products, to avoid potential interactions and ensure the safe use of Strattera.

Special precautions should be taken in seniors, children, and individuals with certain medical conditions (such as liver or kidney problems, heart disease, diabetes, seizures) or those taking other medications, as they may be at a higher risk of developing a wider range of side effects.

Discuss any concerns or questions about the warnings and precautions associated with Strattera with a healthcare provider.
