Skelaxin (Metaxalone)

Do’s

• The typical dose of Skelaxin for adults and children over 12 years old is 800 mg three to four times a day. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
• Take Skelaxin by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider.
• If you experience side effects after taking this medication with a high-fat meal, it may be best to take it on an empty stomach or after a light meal.
• To prevent a serious high blood pressure reaction, follow a special diet recommended by your healthcare provider to limit your intake of tyramine while taking this medicine. This involves avoiding foods and beverages that are high in tyramine. Consult your healthcare provider for more details and a complete list of other foods that contain tyramine that you should limit or avoid.
• Follow your healthcare provider's instructions closely and consult them for any concerns or questions about your medication.

Don’ts

• Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase. 

• Drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Upset stomach

Symptoms of serotonin syndrome may include mental status changes, autonomic instability, neuromuscular aberrations, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Discontinue Skelaxin if serotonin syndrome is suspected.

Taking Skelaxin with food may enhance general CNS depression. Elderly patients may be especially susceptible to this effect. Skelaxin may impair mental and/or physical abilities required for the performance of hazardous tasks, such as operating machinery or driving a motor vehicle, especially when used with alcohol or other CNS depressants.

The impact of hepatic and renal disease on the pharmacokinetics of metaxalone has not been determined. Skelaxin should be used with caution in patients with hepatic and/or renal impairment.

The sedative effects of Skelaxin and other CNS depressants may be additive. Caution should be exercised with patients who take more than one of these CNS depressants simultaneously. Additionally, caution is advised when metaxalone is co-administered with drugs that may affect the serotonergic neurotransmitter systems, such as tramadol or SSRIs.

Skelaxin should not be used in individuals with anemia, severe kidney disease, or severe liver disease. It can cause side effects that may impair thinking or reactions. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Skelaxin.

Consult a healthcare provider before taking Skelaxin or any medication, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment. Always follow the guidance of your healthcare provider when using Skelaxin.
