Dantrium (Dantrolene)

Do’s

• Take Dantrium exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, including dosage and frequency.
• Take it consistently to experience its full benefits. Aim to take it at the same time each day.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your muscle tightness or spasms don't improve or worsen.

Don'ts

• Don't increase your dose or take it more often than prescribed.
• Don't stop taking Dantrium without consulting your healthcare provider.
• Don't take Dantrium if you are allergic to it.

Dantrium dosage is based on your medical condition, weight, and response to treatment. For long-term muscle tightness, your healthcare provider may gradually increase your dose to minimize side effects and find the most effective level for you. If using Dantrium to prevent or treat malignant hyperthermia, treatment typically lasts for several days.

Common side effects may include:

• Drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Weakness
• General malaise
• Fatigue
• Diarrhea

Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:

• Severe constipation
• Vision changes
• Black or tarry stools
• Vomit that looks like coffee grounds
• Mental/mood changes
• Trouble swallowing
• Problems with urination
• Seizures
• Fast heartbeat
• Easy bruising/bleeding
• Signs of infection (such as persistent sore throat, fever, chills)
• Chest pain
• Swelling of the ankles/feet
• Trouble breathing

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Dantrium,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies to dantrolene or inactive ingredients.

Discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider, especially if you have:

• Liver problems (hepatitis, cirrhosis)
• Breathing problems (COPD)
• Heart problems

Dantrolene may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until the effects wear off. Limit alcohol and marijuana use which can worsen these effects.

Dantrolene can increase sun sensitivity. Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning booths/sunlamps, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing outdoors. Seek medical help for sunburn or skin blisters/redness.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take (including Dantrium) before any surgery.

Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider before using Dantrium during pregnancy as it should only be used when clearly necessary. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding as information on Dantrium passing into breast milk is unknown.
