Sandomigran DS, also known as pizotifen, is indicated for the prophylactic (preventive) treatment of various types of vascular headaches, including typical and atypical migraines, vasomotor headaches, and cluster headaches (Horton's syndrome).

Do’s

  • When taking Sandomigran DS, follow the dosage and administration instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
  • The starting dose for adults is 0.5 mg once daily at bedtime. The daily dose may be gradually increased to the usual maintenance dose of 1.5 mg at bedtime or in three divided doses. The dosage range is 1 mg to 6 mg daily, with up to 3 mg given in a single dose.
  • The starting dose for adolescents is 0.5 mg once daily at bedtime. A maximum single dose of 1 mg can be given at bedtime. The total daily dose may be gradually increased up to 1.5 mg given in divided doses.
  • It may take up to 4 weeks for the medication to have its maximum effect. If you are concerned that the medication is not working, continue taking it as prescribed and discuss your concerns with your healthcare provider.
  • If you miss a dose and normally take Sandomigran DS tablets 2 or more times a day, take the last missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if there are less than 4 hours left before your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time.

Don’ts

  • Do not stop taking Sandomigran DS suddenly without talking to your healthcare provider first. Stopping the medication abruptly may cause unwanted side effects.
  • Do not double doses or take more than your maximum daily dose.

  • Drowsiness or sedation
  • Weight gain
  • Increased appetite
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

Sandomigran DS may cause sedation, somnolence, and dizziness. Therefore, caution should be exercised when driving or using machinery. Patients being treated with Sandomigran DS and experiencing sedation and/or somnolence episodes should refrain from driving or engaging in activities where impaired alertness may put themselves or others at risk.

Withdrawal reactions have been reported following abrupt cessation of pizotifen. Therefore, gradual withdrawal is recommended.
