Risperdal Liquid, also known as risperidone oral solution, is indicated for the treatment of several conditions. Here are the main indications for Risperdal liquid:

  1. Schizophrenia and Related Psychoses: Risperdal is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and related psychoses.
  2. Acute Mania Associated with Bipolar 1 Disorder: Risperdal is indicated for the short-term treatment of acute mania associated with bipolar 1 disorder.
  3. Psychotic Symptoms and Behavioral Disturbances in Dementia: Risperdal is indicated for the treatment (up to 12 weeks) of psychotic symptoms, or persistent agitation or aggression unresponsive to non-pharmacological approaches in patients with moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer's type.

Do’s

  • Read the Instructions for Use provided by your pharmacist before you start using Risperdal Liquid and each time you get a refill.
  • Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once or twice daily.
  • Carefully measure the dose using the special measuring device that is provided.
  • If directed, you may mix the measured dose with a small amount of liquid (3 to 4 ounces/about 100 milliliters) such as water, coffee, orange juice, or low-fat milk. Take all of the mixture right away.
  • The dosage of Risperdal Liquid is based on your age, medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
  • To reduce the risk of side effects, your healthcare provider may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow their instructions carefully.
  • Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day. 
  • Keep taking this medication even if you feel well. If your condition lasts or gets worse, be sure to tell your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

  • Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.
  • Do not mix Risperdal Liquid with cola or tea. 
  • Do not prepare a supply in advance. 
  • Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your healthcae provider.

Common Side Effects:

  • Sleepiness
  • Movement problems

Store Risperdal Liquid at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not freeze the liquid form of this medication. Keep all medications, including Risperdal, away from children and pets.

Risperdal may interact with other medications, including certain antidepressants, antifungal drugs, and blood pressure medications. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs, including Risperdal, are at an increased risk of death. Risperdal is not approved for the treatment of patients with dementia-related psychosis.

Risperdal should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. 

Risperdal may also pass into breast milk, consult with your healthcare provider before breastfeeding while taking this medication.
