Megace (Megestrol Acetate)

Do's

• Take Megace exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. 
• Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding dosage and frequency. 
• Take Megace regularly for maximum benefit. 
• Take Megace at the same time(s) each day to ensure consistent effectiveness. 

Don’ts

• Don't change your dosage without consulting your healthcare provider. 
• Don't increase the dose or take Megace more often than prescribed, as it won't improve your condition faster and can increase side effects. 
• Don't handle Megace or inhale dust from the tablets if you are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant, as it can harm an unborn baby. 

Common side effects may include:

• Dizziness
• Drowsiness
• Fatigue
• Pain or pressure in the throat or chest
• Nausea
• Upset stomach
• Changes in taste
• Skin rash
• Muscle weakness
• Depression
• Headache
• Changes in menstrual periods

Serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include:

• Signs of high levels of serotonin in the body, such as agitation, hallucinations, fever, rapid heart rate, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, or fainting
• Signs of a stroke, such as sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body), severe headache, slurred speech, or problems with vision or balance
• Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing
• Signs of severe infection, such as high fever, severe chills, body aches, or sore throat
• Signs of liver problems, such as nausea/vomiting that doesn't stop, unusual tiredness, dark urine, or yellowing of eyes/skin
• Signs of blood

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Megace,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Be sure to inform your healthcare provider of any allergies you have before taking megestrol.

Disclose your medical history to your healthcare provider, especially regarding:

• Adrenal gland issues (Cushing's syndrome)
• Blood clots
• Diabetes
• Heart disease (including heart failure)
• High blood pressure
• Kidney disease
• Stomach or abdominal problems
• Unusual vaginal bleeding

If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar regularly and inform your healthcare provider of the results. They might need to adjust your medication, exercise routine, or diet.

Long-term megestrol use may affect your stress response. Inform your healthcare provider about taking megestrol before any surgery, emergency treatment, or serious illness/injury.

Older adults are more susceptible to side effects, especially blood clots.

Megestrol is harmful to unborn babies. Women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should not take it. Pregnancy tests are mandatory before starting this medication. Discuss reliable birth control methods with your healthcare provider.

Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle megestrol tablets due to potential absorption through skin and lungs, which can harm the unborn baby.

Megestrol passes into breast milk and breastfeeding is not recommended while taking it. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
