Advair HFA (Fluticasone/Salmeterol)

Do’s

• Prime the inhaler if it's new, unused for a long time, or dropped (follow specific instructions for your product).
• Shake the inhaler well for 5 seconds before each use.
• Inhale the medication by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, typically twice daily (morning and evening, 12 hours apart).
• Wait 30 seconds between puffs if prescribed two inhalations.
• Use Advair HFA last if using other inhalers at the same time (wait at least 1 minute between each medication).
• Gargle, rinse your mouth with water and spit after each use to prevent side effects like dry mouth, hoarseness, or oral yeast infections. Do not swallow the rinse water.
• Clean the inhaler at least once a week as directed.
• Use Advair HFA regularly and at consistent times for maximum benefit.
• Consult your healthcare provider before stopping Advair HFA or changing the dosage.
• Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding using other long-acting beta-agonists while on Advair HFA.

Don'ts

• Don't spray the medication into your eyes while priming the inhaler.
• Don't stop using your quick-relief inhaler (albuterol/salbutamol) without consulting your healthcare provider. Use it only for sudden shortness of breath/asthma attacks.
• Don't expect immediate results. It may take a week or longer to experience the full benefit of Advair HFA.
• Don't hesitate to tell your healthcare provider if your symptoms worsen or don't improve.
• Don't confuse your controller and quick-relief inhalers. Ask your healthcare provider for clear instructions on which to use and when.

Common side effects of Advair HFA may include:

• Upper respiratory tract infection
• Throat irritation
• Hoarseness and voice changes
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Muscle and bone pain

Serious side effects of Advair HFA:

• Pneumonia
• Increased risk of serious infection
• Severe allergic reaction
• Eye problems, such as cataracts and glaucoma
• Adrenal gland problems
• Thyroid problems
• Decreased bone density
• Paradoxical bronchospasm (worsening of breathing difficulties)
• Chest pain, rapid heart rate, tremor, or nervousness
• Slowed growth rate in children

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Advair HFA,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies, especially to fluticasone, salmeterol, or any other medications.

Inform your healthcare provider of your medical history, particularly if you have:

• Current/past infections (tuberculosis, herpes)
• High blood pressure
• Bone loss (osteoporosis)
• Heart problems (chest pain, heart attack, irregular heartbeat)
• Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
• Diabetes
• Eye problems (cataracts, glaucoma)
• Seizures
• Liver disease

Salmeterol may affect heart rhythm. Tell your healthcare provider about any heart problems or medications that can affect heart rhythm (QT prolongation).

Low potassium or magnesium levels can increase the risk of heart rhythm problems. Discuss this with your healthcare provider if you take diuretics or have conditions causing electrolyte imbalances.

Advair HFA may mask infection signs. Tell your healthcare provider if you've been exposed to an infection.

Advair HFA use may affect stress response. Inform your healthcare provider if you have upcoming surgery, emergency treatment, or a serious illness/injury.

Older adults with COPD may have a higher risk of pneumonia or be more sensitive to side effects.

Children's growth may be slightly slowed with long-term use. Regular healthcare provider visits are recommended to monitor growth.

Advair HFA should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. Safety during breastfeeding is unknown. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
