Xopenex HFA is used to prevent and treat wheezing and shortness of breath caused by breathing problems such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.  It is a quick-relief drug that belongs to a class of drugs known as bronchodilators. It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways so that they open up, allowing for easier breathing. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school.
Do’s:
  • Shake well before use.
  • If it's your first time using the inhaler or it hasn't been used in 3 days, follow the instructions for test sprays in the air to ensure proper function.
  • Inhale by mouth. Use Xopenex as directed by your healthcare provider, typically every 4-6 hours as needed. Inhale deeply through your mouth.
  • If prescribed two puffs, wait at least 1 minute between inhalations.
  • Using a spacer device with the inhaler may improve medication delivery. Ask your healthcare provider for guidance.
  • Keep track of the number of inhalations used and discard the inhaler after using the labeled amount (including test sprays).
  • Understand the difference between controller and quick-relief inhalers. Ask your healthcare provider about a plan for worsening symptoms or when to seek medical attention.
Don'ts:
  • Don't spray your eyes. Avoid contact with your eyes.
  • Don't use other inhalers without spacing. If using other inhalers, wait at least 1 minute between each medication.
  • Don't test for remaining medication by floating the metal canister in water.
  • Don't increase your dose or use it more often without consulting your healthcare provider. Overuse can lead to serious side effects.
