Singulair Granules are indicated for the following uses:

  1. Treatment of asthma: Singulair Granules are used as add-on therapy in pediatric patients (6 months to 5 years of age) with mild to moderate persistent asthma who are inadequately controlled on inhaled corticosteroids and in whom as-needed short-acting β-agonists provide inadequate clinical control of asthma.
  2. Prophylaxis of asthma: Singulair Granules are used for the prophylaxis of asthma in pediatric patients (2 years of age and older) in whom the predominant component is exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.
  3. Relief of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis: Singulair Granules are used for the relief of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis in pediatric patients (2 years of age and older) and adult patients.
  4. Relief of symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis: Singulair Granules are used for the relief of symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis in pediatric patients (6 months of age and older) and adult patients.

Do’s

  • Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start taking Singulair Granules and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
  • Take Singulair Granules by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider. The dosage is based on your age and medical condition. Take the medication at the same time each day to establish a routine.
  • You may swallow the granules plain, without any additional mixing or dissolving.
  • If you prefer, you can dissolve the granules in certain liquids. Empty the packet into a small cup with 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) of baby formula or breast milk (cool or at room temperature). Stir well and take the entire mixture right away. After taking the liquid mixture, you may drink other liquids if desired.
  • Another option is to mix the granules with specific soft foods. You can mix them with applesauce, mashed carrots, rice, or ice cream. Empty the packet into a small cup with 1 spoonful of the chosen soft food (cool or at room temperature) and mix thoroughly. Take all of the mixture right away.
  • If you are taking Singulair Granules for asthma or both asthma and allergies, take your dose in the evening. If you are taking it to prevent only allergies, you can take your dose either in the morning or the evening.
  • If you are taking Singulair Granules to prevent breathing problems during exercise, take your dose at least 2 hours before exercise.
  • Continue using this medication regularly to keep your asthma under control, even during sudden asthma attacks or periods when you have no asthma symptoms. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding other medications for asthma.
  • Singulair Granules are not meant to relieve sudden attacks of asthma. If an asthma attack or other breathing problem occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler as prescribed. Always have a quick-relief inhaler with you.
  • Learn which medications you should use every day and which ones to use if your breathing suddenly worsens. Ask your healthcare provider what to do if you experience a worsening cough or shortness of breath, wheezing, increased sputum, worsening peak flow meter readings, increased use of your quick-relief inhaler, or if your quick-relief inhaler does not seem to be working well. Understand when you can self-medicate and when you should seek immediate medical help.

Don’ts

  • Do not mix the liquid mixture with water or other liquids.
  • Do not save the liquid and food mixture for later use.

  • Do not take an additional dose before exercise if you are already taking this medication daily for asthma or allergies, as it may increase the risk of side effects.
