Flovent Diskus is indicated for the long-term control of asthma in adults and children. It is a steroid (fluticasone propionate) that helps prevent asthma attacks by reducing swelling and mucus in the airways.

Flovent Diskus is not to be regarded as a bronchodilator and is not indicated for the rapid relief of bronchospasm. Patients should be instructed to contact their healthcare provider immediately when episodes of asthma that are not responsive to bronchodilators occur during the course of treatment with Flovent Diskus.

Do’

  • Read the step-by-step instructions for using Flovent Diskus provided in the Patient Information Leaflet. Children should use Flovent Diskus with an adult's help, as instructed by the child's healthcare provider.
  • Hold the device in a level, flat position and inhale the medication by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually twice a day (in the morning and evening). The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
  • Inhale each dose deeply to ensure the right amount of drug reaches your lungs. It's normal to either taste/feel the drug when you inhale.
  • If two inhalations are prescribed, wait at least one minute between them. If using other inhalers at the same time, wait at least 1 minute between the use of each medication, and use the corticosteroid last.
  • To prevent dry mouth, hoarseness, and oral yeast infections, gargle, rinse your mouth with water, and spit out after each use.
  • Close the device after each use.
  • Use this medication regularly at evenly spaced intervals to get the most benefit from it.
  • If you are regularly taking a different corticosteroid by mouth, you should not stop taking it unless directed by your healthcare provider. Abruptly stopping the drug may lead to withdrawal symptoms.
  • It may take up to 2 weeks or longer before the full benefit of this drug takes effect. Tell your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or if it worsens
  • Learn which of your inhalers you should use every day (controller drugs) and which you should use if your breathing suddenly worsens (quick-relief drugs). Ask your healthcare provider ahead of time what you should do if you have new or worsening symptoms.

Don’ts

  • Do not use Flovent Diskus unless your healthcare provider has taught you how to use the inhaler and you understand how to use it correctly
  • Do not breathe out (exhale) into the inhaler device.
  • Do not swallow the rinse water.
  • Do not take the inhaler apart or wash the mouthpiece or any part of the device.
  • Do not increase your dose, use this medication more often, or stop using it without first consulting your healthcare provider.
  • General aches and pains or a general feeling of illness
  • Nausea, vomiting, upset stomach
  • Upper airway infection

Not all individuals may experience these side effects, and some may require medical attention. Consult a healthcare provider for personalized guidance and report any adverse effects experienced during the use of Flovent Diskus.

Store Flovent Diskus at room temperature in a dry place away from moisture, heat, and sunlight. Do not freeze it. Keep it away from children and pets. Properly discard the product when it is expired or no longer needed.

Do not use Flovent Diskus if you are allergic to fluticasone or milk proteins. Seek medical attention if you experience severe allergic reactions.

Flovent Diskus is not a rescue medicine for asthma attacks. Seek medical attention if your breathing problems worsen quickly, or if you think your asthma medications are not working effectively.

In clinical trials, localized infections of the mouth and pharynx with Candida albicans have occurred in subjects treated with Flovent Diskus. If such an infection develops, it should be treated with appropriate antifungal therapy while treatment with Flovent Diskus continues, but at times therapy with Flovent Diskus may need to be interrupted.

The use of Flovent Diskus is contraindicated in conditions such as severe milk protein allergy and primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma where intensive measures are required.

Adhere to these warnings and precautions when using Flovent Diskus and consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance.
