Do’s

Understand the correct injection technique and disposal methods for needles, syringes, injectors, and unused medication.

Inject the medication just under the skin as soon as migraine symptoms appear.

Clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol (syringe/needle or auto-injector).

Ensure your skin is clean and dry (needle-free device).

Use a second injection only after one hour or as directed by your healthcare provider, if symptoms persist. (Max 12mg in 24 hours)

Switch to oral sumatriptan 2 hours after injection if symptoms only improve partially or return. (Max 100mg tablets in 24 hours)

Inform your healthcare provider if you have risk factors for heart disease before using Imitrex. They might monitor you during the first dose.

Don'ts

Don't reuse syringes or needle-free devices. (Check auto-injector instructions for reuse)

Don't inject directly into a vein (IV) or muscle (IM).

Don't inject through clothing.

Don't take more than the prescribed dose (max 12mg in 24 hours).

Don't use the medication more often than 10 days per month to avoid medication overuse headaches.

Don't hesitate to talk to your healthcare provider if you need to use it more often, it's not working as expected, or your headaches worsen.

Common side effects of Imitrex Injection Stat Dose System Autoinjector Kit may include:

Injection site reactions, such as pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site

Tingling or numbness sensations

Warm or cold sensations

Dizziness or lightheadedness

Flushing or feeling of warmth

Fatigue or drowsiness

Nausea or vomiting

Muscle weakness or stiffness

Jaw or neck pain

Chest discomfort or tightness

Sensation of pressure or heaviness in various parts of the body

Serious side effects:

Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing

Chest pain or tightness

Rapid or irregular heartbeat

Shortness of breath

Severe or persistent headache

Severe stomach pain

Vision changes or loss

Seizures

Signs of serotonin syndrome, such as agitation, hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, fever, muscle stiffness, or coordination problems

Talk to your healthcare provider if you have allergies to sumatriptan, other triptan medications, latex (present in some versions), or any other ingredients.

Inform your healthcare provider about any blood circulation problems, specific types of headaches (hemiplegic or basilar migraine), heart issues, liver disease, history of seizures, or stroke.

Be aware of risk factors for heart problems. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, family history of heart disease, being overweight, smoking, being postmenopausal (women), or being over 40 (men) can increase your risk. Your healthcare provider may need to examine your heart before prescribing Imitrex.

Imitrex may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until these effects subside. Limit alcohol and discuss marijuana use with your healthcare provider.

The risk of side effects, particularly high blood pressure and heart problems, may be higher for older adults.

Discuss the risks and benefits of using Imitrex with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
