Rybelsus (Semaglutide) Indications and Ingredients

Rybelsus tablets (semaglutide) are intended for adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus to regulate blood sugar levels. However, Rybelsus has demonstrated benefits in promoting weight loss in clinical studies. Rybelsus tablets function by lowering blood sugar (glucose) levels through two primary mechanisms: increasing insulin release and reducing glucagon secretion. In addition, this medicine may slow down stomach emptying after meals. Rybelsus belongs to the class of medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists).

Important Note:

Rybelsus is not intended for treating type 1 diabetes and should only be used as directed for type 2 diabetes management.

Rybelsus (Semaglutide) Dosing and Storage

  1. Take Rybelsus with a sip of water (no more than 4 ounces or 120 milliliters) as your doctor directs, usually once daily. Avoid taking it with any other beverage. Swallow the tablet whole, and refrain from splitting, chewing, or crushing it. Wait at least 30 minutes after taking semaglutide before orally consuming anything other than plain water or any other medication.
  2. Eat your meals 30 to 60 minutes after taking semaglutide for optimal effectiveness. Maintain consistency in the way you take this medication for each dose.
  3. The dosage will be determined based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment.
  4. To minimize the risk of side effects, your doctor may advise starting with a low dose and gradually increasing it. Follow your doctor’s instructions diligently.
  5. Ensure regular use of this medication to derive its maximum benefits. Take it at the same time each day to aid in remembering.
  6. Do not increase your dose or use this drug more frequently or longer duration than prescribed. Doing so will not hasten your recovery but may increase the likelihood of experiencing adverse effects.
  7. If your condition does not improve or worsens (e.g., if your blood sugar is too high or too low), inform your doctor.

Rybelsus (Semaglutide) Warnings and Precautions

Before taking Rybelsus, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Rybelsus may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of a specific eye problem (diabetic retinopathy), a disease of the pancreas (pancreatitis), gallbladder disease, kidney problems, stomach/intestinal disorders (such as gastroparesis, digestion problems).

You may experience blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness due to extremely low or high blood sugar. Only drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness or clear vision once you can safely perform such activities.

Limit alcohol while using this drug because it can increase your risk of developing low blood sugar.

It may be harder to control your blood sugar when your body is stressed (such as due to fever, infection, injury, or surgery). Consult your doctor because Rybelsus may require changing your treatment plan, medications, or blood sugar testing.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

During pregnancy, RYBELSUS should be used only when needed. If you are planning pregnancy, have becoming pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, discuss with your doctor right away the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy. The manufacturer recommends stopping this medication two months before a planned pregnancy. Pregnancy may cause or worsen diabetes. Discuss a plan with your doctor for managing your blood sugar while pregnant. Your doctor may change your diabetes treatment during pregnancy (such as diet and medications, including insulin). It is unknown if Rybelsus medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Do not hesitate to consult your pharmacist or physician for any additional queries or concerns.

Rybelsus (Semaglutide) Side Effects

Like many medications, there is a possibility of experiencing side effects. A side effect is an undesirable reaction when the drug is taken at standard doses. These side effects can range from mild to severe and may be temporary or long-lasting. If you have any concerns about potential side effects, you must discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of using this medication. They can provide personalized guidance to address your specific health needs.

Rybelsus (Semaglutide) Severe Side Effects

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following severe side effects:

  • Signs of kidney problems, such as changes in the amount of urine
  • Vision changes, like decreased or blurred vision
  • Symptoms of pancreas or gallbladder disease, such as persistent nausea/vomiting or severe stomach/abdominal pain

Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia):

Semaglutide alone usually does not cause low blood sugar, but it may occur when prescribed alongside other diabetes medications. Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist whether the dose(s) of your other diabetes medications need to be adjusted. In addition, low blood sugar may result from drinking excessive alcohol, inadequate calorie intake from food, or engaging in weighty exercise. Symptoms of low blood sugar may include

  • sudden sweating,
  • shaking,
  • fast heartbeat,
  • hunger,
  • blurred vision,
  • dizziness,
  • or tingling in the hands/feet.

Consider carrying glucose tablets or gel to treat low blood sugar. Without these, raise your blood sugar rapidly by consuming a quick source of sugar, such as table sugar, honey, candy, fruit juice, or non-diet soda. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for guidance on what to do if you miss a meal.

High Blood Sugar (Hyperglycemia):

Increased thirst and urination are symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). If you experience these symptoms, inform your doctor immediately, as your dosage may need adjustment.

Allergic Reactions:

While rare, a severe allergic reaction to RYBELSUS may occur. Seek medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, including

  • rash,
  • itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat),
  • severe dizziness,
  • or trouble breathing.

Rybelsus (Semaglutide) Common Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation

Nausea typically improves as you continue taking semaglutide. If these effects persist or worsen, promptly inform your doctor or pharmacist. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because they have determined that the benefits outweigh the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not experience severe side effects.
