Do’s

• Take it exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. This usually means once daily with breakfast.
• Swallow the tablets whole. Crushing or chewing them can cause side effects.
• Take it consistently, ideally at the same time each day. This helps regulate the medication in your body.
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
• Be upfront with your healthcare provider about all medications you take. This includes prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal products.
• Inform your healthcare provider if you experience any side effects.

Don'ts

• Don't adjust your dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.
• Don't skip doses of Invokamet XR. Consistency is key for managing your blood sugar.
• Don't tamper with the tablets. Swallow them whole.
• Don't combine Invokamet XR with alcohol.
• Don't stop taking Invokamet XR abruptly. Talk to your healthcare provider first.
• Don't neglect to tell your healthcare provider if your diabetes worsens or new symptoms arise.

Common Side Effects:

• Lactic acidosis
• Vulvovaginal candidiasis
• Vaginal infection
• Vulvitis
• Vulvovaginitis
• Cyanocobalamin deficiency
• Balanitis
• Balanoposthitis
• Increased urine output
• Nocturia
• Polyuria
• Urinary urgency
• Pollakiuria

Serious Side Effects:

• Dehydration, which can lead to severely low blood pressure or a serious electrolyte imbalance. Patients should seek medical attention if they experience ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, or if they are sweating more than usual
• Serious infections in the penis or vagina, which may present with symptoms such as burning, itching, odor, discharge, pain, tenderness, redness, swelling of the genital or rectal area, fever, or general malaise
• Signs of a urinary tract infection (such as burning/painful/frequent/urgent urination, pink/bloody urine)
• Signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine, swelling legs/feet)
• Signs of high level of potassium in the blood (such as muscle weakness and slow/irregular heartbeat)
• Serious allergic reactions, including red or bluish skin, slowed breathing, trouble moving or walking, inability to move, and enlarged pupils

Talk to your healthcare provider about any allergies, especially to canagliflozin, metformin, or any inactive ingredients.

Medical Conditions to Disclose to your healthcare provider:

• Breathing problems (asthma, obstructive lung disease)
• Blood problems (anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency)
• Dehydration
• Low blood pressure
• Heart failure
• Kidney disease
• Liver problems
• Pancreatitis
• Alcohol use/abuse
• Blood mineral imbalances (high potassium)
• Yeast infections (vaginal or penis)

Inform your healthcare provider of all medications you take (prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal) before surgery or X-ray/scanning procedures using iodinated contrast. You may need to temporarily stop Invokamet XR.

Be cautious of blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness which can occur due to blood sugar fluctuations. Avoid driving or activities requiring alertness until you feel safe.

Limit alcohol intake while using Invokamet XR. Alcohol can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, low blood sugar, or high ketone levels.

Be aware of conditions that can lead to dehydration such as high fever, diuretic use, excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. Dehydration can increase the risk of lactic acidosis. Stop taking Invokamet XR and consult your healthcare provider with prolonged diarrhea or vomiting. Drink plenty of fluids unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider.

Stress, infection, injury, or surgery can make blood sugar control more difficult. Discuss a plan with your healthcare provider for managing blood sugar during these times.

Older adults may be more susceptible to side effects such as low blood sugar, dehydration, lactic acidosis, dizziness/fainting, or bone loss.

Women using Invokamet XR may experience menstrual cycle changes and an increased risk of pregnancy. Discuss reliable birth control methods with your healthcare provider.

Invokamet XR should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

A plan for managing blood sugar during pregnancy is crucial. Your healthcare provider may adjust your treatment plan.

Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding as metformin passes into breast milk, and the effects of canagliflozin are unknown.
