Provera (Medroxyprogesterone)

Do’s

• Before starting or refilling a Provera prescription,  read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, consult your healthcare provider.
• Take Provera by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider. Follow the dosing schedule carefully, and if you have any questions, consult your healthcare provider.
• For use in combination hormone replacement therapy with estrogens, take Provera usually once daily for the prescribed number of days each month as directed.
• For the treatment of stopped menstrual periods (amenorrhea) and abnormal bleeding from the uterus, take Provera usually once daily for 5 to 10 days during the second half of the planned menstrual cycle or as directed by your healthcare provider.
• Withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within 3 to 7 days after you stop taking the medication.
• The dosage of Provera is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

Common Side Effects:

• Breast tenderness
• Breast milk secretion
• Breakthrough bleeding
• Fluid retention
• Vaginal yeast infection

Other Possible Side Effects:

• General swelling underneath the skin or mucous membranes

Not all individuals may experience these side effects, and some may require medical attention. If you experience any side effects while taking Provera, consult your healthcare provider for advice and guidance.

Long-term continuous administration of estrogen plus progestin therapy has shown an increased risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Discuss the potential risks with your healthcare provider, especially if you have a history of cancer or are at an increased risk for certain types of cancers.

There have been reports of serious thrombotic events in women using Provera. Discuss any risk factors for thromboembolic disorders with your healthcare provider.

Provera should not be used during pregnancy, and there may be an increased risk of minor birth defects in children whose mothers take Provera during the first 4 months of pregnancy. Discuss pregnancy-related concerns with your healthcare provider.

Avoid smoking while taking Provera, as smoking greatly increases the risk of blood clots. Additionally, inform your healthcare provider about all other medicines you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products, as they may affect Provera.
