Danocrine (danazol) is used to treat pelvic pain and infertility due to endometriosis, breast pain/tenderness/nodules due to fibrocystic breast disease, and to prevent swelling due to hereditary angioedema

Danazol is an androgen similar to testosterone. For endometriosis, Danocrine works by shrinking the displaced tissue of the uterus. 

For fibrocystic breast disease, it blocks the release of hormones that cause breast pain and lumps. For hereditary angioedema, it increases the amount of a natural substance in the body

For hereditary angioedema, it helps to increase the amount of a certain protein in the body's defense system (immune system)

Do’s

  • Follow healthcare provider's instructions: Take Danocrine exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, typically twice daily.
  • With or without food: You can take Danocrine with or without food, but choose one way and be consistent for every dose.
  • Take consistently: Use Danocrine regularly at the same time(s) each day for maximum benefit.
  • Inform healthcare provider about progress: Tell your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve or worsens.

Don'ts

  • Don't adjust dosage or frequency: Don't alter the dosage or how often you take Danocrine without consulting your healthcare provider.
  • Don't discontinue abruptly: Talk to your healthcare provider before stopping Danocrine.

Common Side Effects:

  • Swelling of hands/ankles/feet
  • Menstrual changes (such as spotting, missed periods)
  • Mental/mood changes (such as nervousness, mood swings)
  • Acne or other skin problems
  • Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness
  • Hair loss or increased hair growth
  • Dryness of mouth
  • Weight gain
  • Hoarse or deepened voice
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Vertigo
  • Loss of appetite
  • Skin rash
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Temporary burning or itching of the rectal area
  • Rectal bleeding

Serious Side Effects:

  • Life-threatening strokes
  • Increased pressure in the brain
  • Serious liver disease complicated by potentially life-threatening abdominal bleeding
  • Allergic reactions: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Bloody or tarry stools, dark urine
  • Cough with bloody mucus or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Severe burning or other irritation after using the medication
  • Sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights
  • Signs of infection such as fever, persistent sore throat, painful urination, worsening redness or irritation near the anus

  • Seizures
  • Migraines
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Blood disorders (porphyria, polycythemia)

Inform your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you take, including Danocrine, before any surgery.

Danocrine may affect sperm production in men. Consult your healthcare provider for more details.

Danocrine must not be used during pregnancy as it can harm the unborn baby. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your healthcare provider immediately. Discuss reliable birth control methods with your healthcare provider while using Danocrine.

It is unknown if Danocrine passes into breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended while using Danocrine due to the potential risk to the infant. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.

Danocrine can rarely cause serious side effects, including blood clots, liver problems, and increased pressure in the brain. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms like persistent nausea/vomiting, severe headache, weakness on one side of the body, speech difficulties, vision changes, severe stomach pain, dark urine, yellowing of the skin/eyes, or mental/mood changes.

Danocrine may interact with other medications. Tell your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you take before starting Danocrine.
