Prezista, in combination with other HIV medications, is used to help control HIV infection. It works by reducing the amount of HIV in the body, which allows the immune system to function more effectively. This lowers the risk of HIV complications, such as new infections and cancer, and improves the quality of life for individuals living with HIV.

Darunavir, the active ingredient in Prezista, belongs to a class of drugs called protease inhibitors. Darunavir must be taken with specific other medications, such as cobicistat or ritonavir, to boost the levels of darunavir in the body. This boosting effect enhances the efficacy of darunavir in managing HIV infection.

Darunavir is not a cure for HIV infection. To reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others, it is important to continue taking all prescribed HIV medications exactly as directed by a healthcare provider.

Prezista is not recommended for use in children younger than 3 years old due to the increased risk of serious side effects.

Do’s

  • Take Prezista exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, always with food.
  • Take it at the same time(s) every day for best results.
  • Use a measuring device/spoon provided for the liquid form, not a household spoon.
  • Continue taking Prezista consistently, along with other HIV medications, even if you feel well.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about any lab tests or changes in your medical condition.

Don'ts

  • Don't take more or less than the prescribed dosage.

  • Don't crush, chew, or break the tablets unless your healthcare provider instructs you to do so. (Applies if taking tablets)
