Zovirax Ophthalmic Ointment is a medication used for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections of the eye.

It contains acyclovir as its active ingredient, which belongs to a group of medicines called antivirals. This ointment is specifically formulated for use in the eye and is not intended for use in other areas of the body.

Zovirax Ophthalmic Ointment works by stopping the production of the herpes simplex virus, which causes the eye infections it is used to treat. Acyclovir, the active ingredient in the ointment, slows down the growth and spread of the herpes virus in the body.

It does not, however, eliminate the virus from the body or prevent future occurrences of the infection

Do’s

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before using Zovirax Opth Ointment.
  • Tilt your head back and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket.
  • Squeeze a small amount (about 1/2 inch) of ointment directly from the tube into the pocket you created in your lower eyelid.
  • Close your eye gently and roll your eyeball in all directions to spread the medication evenly.
  • Wipe off any excess ointment from your eyelashes with a clean tissue.
  • Repeat the process in your other eye if needed.
  • Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding dosage and frequency of application. It's typical to use it several times a day for a prescribed duration.
  • Store Zovirax Opth Ointment at room temperature according to the manufacturer's instructions. Don't freeze it.

Don'ts

  • Don't touch the tip of the ointment tube to your eye or eyelashes. This can contaminate the medication.
  • Don't apply Zovirax Opth Ointment while wearing contact lenses. Remove your lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes after using the ointment before putting them back in.
  • Don't use Zovirax Opth Ointment if the tube is expired or the ointment appears discolored.
  • Don't use Zovirax Opth Ointment for any condition other than what your healthcare provider prescribed it for.
  • Don't share Zovirax Opth Ointment with someone else.
  • Don't stop using Zovirax Opth Ointment without talking to your healthcare provider, even if you start to feel better. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed.
  • Don't apply makeup to your eyes while using Zovirax Opth Ointment.

Common Side Effects:

  • Mild stinging immediately after applying the ointment to the eye(s)
  • Irritation or inflammation of the eyelids (blepharitis) or surface of the eye (conjunctivitis)

Serious Side Effects:

  • Allergic reactions, including swelling of the lips, face, and/or eyelids, and skin rashes or hives
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Zovirax Opth Ointment, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Zovirax ointment is strictly for application to the eye. Do not ingest it or use it on any other part of your body.

The product is sterile when packaged. Avoid contaminating the applicator tip by not touching it to any surface during application. This can introduce bacteria or other germs into the ointment.

If you experience worsening pain, redness, itching, or inflammation after using Zovirax ointment, consult your healthcare provider.

Zovirax is an antiviral medication and will not treat bacterial eye infections. Using it for a bacterial infection may not improve your condition and could potentially contribute to antibiotic resistance.

While uncommon, Zovirax ointment may interact with certain contact lens materials. Consult your healthcare provider about wearing contact lenses while using this medication.

Discuss pregnancy or breastfeeding plans with your healthcare provider before using Zovirax ointment. The potential risks and benefits should be weighed by your healthcare provider.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you use (including Zovirax) before any surgery work.
