Zovirax (Acyclovir)

Do's

• Take Zovirax exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. This includes the dosage (amount and frequency), whether to take it with or without food, and for how long.
• Start taking Zovirax at the first sign of an outbreak, as directed by your healthcare provider. Early treatment may be more effective.
• Shake the liquid form well before each dose. Measure the medication accurately using the provided measuring spoon, not a household spoon.
• Take Zovirax at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day. This helps maintain a consistent level of the medication in your body.
• Drink plenty of fluids while taking Zovirax unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.
• Continue taking Zovirax for the entire prescribed duration, even if you start to feel better. Stopping early can lead to the virus becoming resistant to treatment.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve or worsens after taking Zovirax.

Don't

• Don't change your Zovirax dosage, skip doses, or stop taking it early without consulting your healthcare provider.
• Don't use a household spoon to measure the liquid medication. This can lead to an inaccurate dose.
• Don't take Zovirax past its expiration date.

Common Side Effects:

• Diarrhea
• Nausea or vomiting
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Rash or itching
• Changes in taste
• Insomnia
• Constipation
• Stomach pain
• Mouth sores
• Fatigue

Serious Side Effects:

• Easy bruising or bleeding
• Purple or red pinpoint spots under the skin
• Changes in behavior
• Confusion or hallucinations
• Signs of kidney problems, such as little or no urination, painful or difficult urination, swelling in the feet or ankles, or feeling tired or short of breath

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Zovirax,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies to acyclovir, valacyclovir, or other ingredients.

Disclose your medical history, particularly kidney and immune system problems.

Mention all medications (prescription, non-prescription, and herbal) to your healthcare provider before surgery.

Alert your healthcare provider about Zovirax use before any vaccinations.

Be aware that older adults may experience increased side effects, especially kidney issues, dizziness, drowsiness, and mental/mood changes.

Zovirax does not prevent the spread of genital herpes. To minimize transmission risk:

• Avoid sexual contact during outbreaks or with symptoms.
• Always use effective barrier methods (condoms/dental dams) during sexual activity, even without symptoms.

Consult your healthcare provider before using Zovirax during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
