Onglyza (Saxagliptin) is used with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. By controlling high blood sugar, it helps prevent complications such as kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Saxagliptin works by increasing levels of natural substances called incretins. Incretins help to control blood sugar by increasing insulin release, especially after a meal, and decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver.

Onglyza should be used when symptoms of type 2 diabetes cause severe problems in everyday life and when other medicines or treatments have not been effective. It is not recommended for mild symptoms.

Onglyza is indicated for use in adults with type 2 diabetes and is not recommended for use in children or individuals with type 1 diabetes.
