Janumet is a medication specifically for people with type 2 diabetes. It helps manage blood sugar levels, but it's important to remember that it must be used in combination with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Sometimes, your healthcare provider might recommend combining Janumet with other medications, too.

Janumet has two active ingredients that work in different ways:

  • Sitagliptin: This boosts substances in your body called "incretins". These incretins help your body release more insulin after you eat and signal your liver to reduce the amount of sugar it produces.
  • Metformin: This helps your body become more sensitive to the insulin it already makes. It also reduces the sugar your liver produces and the amount your digestive system absorbs.

Keeping your blood sugar under control with Janumet, healthy habits, and other medications (if needed) is crucial because it helps prevent serious health problems like:

  • Kidney damage
  • Vision loss (blindness)
  • Nerve problems
  • Loss of limbs
  • Problems with sexual function

It might also lower your risk of heart attack or stroke.

Do's

  • Take Janumet orally, twice daily with meals, as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication, unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Talk to your healthcare provider if you have trouble swallowing them whole.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about all your medications, including prescription, nonprescription, and herbal products.
  • Begin Janumet with a low dose as directed by your healthcare provider and gradually increase it to minimize side effects, like upset stomach.
  • Follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully regarding stopping the old medication and starting Janumet if you are already taking another diabetes medication.
  • Follow your healthcare provider 's treatment plan, including meal plan and exercise program.
  • Monitor your blood sugar regularly as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Track and share the results with your healthcare provider.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your blood sugar measurements are too high or too low, as your dosage or treatment may need adjustment.

Don'ts

  • Do not break, cut, or chew the tablets before taking them.

Your dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you are taking.

Common side effects of Janumet include:

  • Swelling of the hands or legs
  • Stuffy or runny nose, sore throat
  • Gas, upset stomach, indigestion
  • Headache, weakness
  • Diarrhea
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Upper respiratory infection

Serious side effects of Janumet include:

  • Allergic reaction
  • Signs of kidney problems, such as changes in urine output or swelling in the hands, legs, or feet

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Janumet,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Disclose any allergies, medical conditions (especially breathing problems, blood problems, kidney disease, liver disease, pancreatitis, gallstones), and current medications (including prescriptions, over-the-counter, and herbal) to your healthcare provider.

Inform your healthcare provider about Janumet before any surgery or X-ray/scan using iodinated contrast.

This can cause blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness. Avoid activities requiring alertness or clear vision until you're sure it's safe.

This is a serious but rare side effect. Talk to your healthcare provider immediately if you experience prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, extreme weakness, unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, or feeling cold.

Conditions like high fever, diuretics, excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can increase your risk. Stop taking Janumet and consult your healthcare provider with prolonged diarrhea or vomiting. Drink plenty of fluids unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider.
