Isopto Carpine (Pilocarpine HCl) is used alone or with other medications to treat high pressure inside the eye due to glaucoma or other eye diseases, such as ocular hypertension.

Lowering high pressure inside the eye helps to prevent blindness, vision loss, and nerve damage. Additionally, this medication may be used during certain eye surgeries and to reverse the effects of drugs used to enlarge the pupil, such as during an eye exam.

Pilocarpine works by causing the pupil of the eye to shrink and decreasing the amount of fluid within the eye.

Do’s

  • Use Isopto Carpine Drops exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, typically 3-4 times daily.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before using the drops.
  • Remove contact lenses before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Apply the drops as directed:
    • Tilt your head back, look up, and pull down your lower eyelid to create a pouch.
    • Place one drop into the pouch without touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface.
    • Close your eye gently and apply pressure to the inner corner for 1-2 minutes to prevent drainage.
    • Repeat for the other eye if instructed.
  • Wipe away excess solution around your eye with a tissue.
  • Wash your hands again after use.
  • Use other eye medications with at least a 5-minute gap between applications. Apply eye drops before ointments.
  • Wait for your vision to clear before driving or operating machinery.

Don'ts

  • Don't adjust your dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.
  • Don't touch the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface.
  • Don't use Isopto Carpine Drops while wearing contact lenses.
  • Don't rinse the dropper. Replace the cap after each use.
  • Don't skip doses or stop using the medication without talking to your healthcare provider first. Especially for glaucoma or high eye pressure, consistent use is crucial.
