Tobradex eye drops are indicated for the treatment of certain eye conditions caused by susceptible bacteria and inflammation. Here are the main indications for Tobradex eye drops:

  1. External infections of the eye: Tobradex eye drops are used to treat external infections of the eye and its adnexa caused by bacteria susceptible to tobramycin. These infections can include conjunctivitis (pink eye), blepharitis (eyelid inflammation), and other bacterial eye infections.
  2. Chronic anterior uveitis: Tobradex eye drops may be prescribed for the treatment of chronic anterior uveitis, which is inflammation of the front part of the eye, including the iris and ciliary body.
  3. Corneal injury: Tobradex eye drops can be used for the treatment of corneal injury caused by chemical agents, radiation, thermal burns, or penetration of foreign bodies.
  4. Other uses: Tobradex eye drops may also be used for other purposes as determined by a healthcare provider.

Do’s

  • Use this medication in the affected eye(s) as directed by your healthcare provider. The dosage may vary depending on your medical condition and response to therapy.
  • Tobradex eye drops are usually administered every 4 to 6 hours. However, depending on the severity of eye inflammation, your healthcare provider may instruct you to use the eye drops more frequently, such as every 2 hours during the first 2 days of treatment.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the eye drops to avoid contamination.
  • Shake the bottle well before each dose.
  • Remove contact lenses before using Tobradex eye drops and consult with your healthcare provider before using them again.
  • Tilt your head back, look upward, and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pouch. Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place one drop into the pouch.
  • Look downward and gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Place one finger at the corner of your eye near the nose and apply gentle pressure to prevent the medication from draining out.
  • Repeat the steps for the other eye if directed to do so and if your dose is more than one drop.
  • Replace the dropper cap after each use.
  • If you are using other eye medications, such as drops or ointments, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes before applying other medications. Use eye drops before eye ointments to allow the drops to enter the eye effectively.
  • After applying the eye drops, wait for several minutes for your vision to clear before driving or operating machinery.
  • To get the most benefit from Tobradex eye drops, use them regularly at the same times each day.
  • Continue using the medication for the full duration prescribed by your healthcare provider, even if symptoms improve after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection.
  • If your condition persists or worsens, inform your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

  • Do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
  • Avoid blinking or rubbing your eyes after applying the medication.
  • Do not rinse the dropper.
  • Eye irritation
  • Redness of the eyes
  • Redness of the eyelid
  • Abnormal sensation in the eye
