Grisovin (Griseofulvin)

Do’s

• Take Griseofulvin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
• This includes taking the correct dosage, at the right intervals, and for the entire duration of treatment, even if symptoms improve.
• Take Griseofulvin with food or a full glass of milk to improve absorption.
• Space Griseofulvin out from medications that may decrease its absorption, such as antacids or antifungals. Talk to your healthcare provider about proper timing.
• Maintain good hygiene practices to prevent re-infection. This includes keeping the infected area clean and dry and washing your hands frequently.

Don'ts

• Don't skip or stop taking Griseofulvin tablets even if you feel better. Stopping treatment early can allow the fungus to return.
• Don't take more Griseofulvin than prescribed by your healthcare provider.
• Don't take Griseofulvin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Discuss alternative medications with your healthcare provider.
• Don't expose yourself to excessive sunlight while taking Griseofulvin. It can increase your sensitivity to the sun. Wear protective clothing and sunscreen.
• Don't operate machinery or drive if Griseofulvin makes you feel drowsy.

Common side effects may include:

• Headache
• Tiredness
• Drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Thirst
• Diarrhea
• Insomnia
• Heartburn
• Flatulence
• Skin rash or eruptions

Serious side effects may include:

• Mental confusion
• Skin rash
• Hives
• Itching
• Soreness or irritation of the mouth or tongue
• Oral thrush
• Numbness of hands or feet
• Sore throat and fever
• Yellowing of eyes or skin
• Swelling in the throat
• Menstrual irregularities

Griseofulvin is contraindicated during pregnancy. It can cause birth defects. Discuss alternative medications with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Griseofulvin is also not recommended for breastfeeding mothers. It is unknown if the medication passes into breast milk and could harm the infant.

Griseofulvin can increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight. This can lead to sunburn more easily. Avoid excessive sun exposure and wear protective clothing, including a hat, and sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

Griseofulvin can cause liver problems in some cases. Your healthcare provider may monitor your liver function with blood tests during treatment, especially if you have a history of liver disease.

Stop taking Griseofulvin and seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.

Griseofulvin can interact with other medications. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements. This will help avoid potential interactions that could decrease Griseofulvin's effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects.

Griseofulvin may increase your sensitivity to alcohol. This can cause unpleasant side effects like nausea, vomiting, and flushing. Avoid alcohol consumption while taking Griseofulvin.

Griseofulvin may cause drowsiness or dizziness in some people. Be cautious driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.
