Elavil (Amitriptyline)

Do's

• Take Elavil exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. 
• Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. 
• Take Elavil regularly to get the most benefit from it. Take it at the same time(s) each day to help remember.   
• Start with a low dose as directed by your healthcare provider to reduce the risk of side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness, and gradually increase it as instructed. 
• Inform your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve or worsen. 
• Be patient, as it may take up to 4 weeks before you feel the full effect of Elavil. 
• Take the medication at bedtime, if you take it only once a day, to help reduce daytime sleepiness. 

Don’ts

• Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase. 
• Do not stop taking Elavil without consulting your healthcare provider. Some conditions may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped. Your healthcare provider may reduce your dose gradually to prevent withdrawal symptoms. 

Elavil (amitriptyline) is an oral medication used for the treatment of depression. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your healthcare provider may occasionally change your dose. It is usually taken 1 to 4 times daily.  

Common Side Effects

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Dry mouth
• Constipation
• Drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Blurred vision
• Increased sweating
• Changes in appetite or weight
• Sexual problems
• Headache
• Weakness or tiredness

Serious Side Effects

Although rare, certain side effects require immediate medical attention. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience any of the following:

• Allergic reaction: Rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
• Changes in heart rate or rhythm
• Difficulty urinating
• Severe constipation
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Fever, chills, sore throat, mouth sores
• Severe drowsiness or confusion
• Muscle stiffness or rigidity
• Signs of serotonin syndrome (e.g., agitation, hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, fever, muscle stiffness or twitching)
• Thoughts of self-harm or suicide

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Elavil,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Before taking Elavil, it is important to be aware of certain warnings and precautions:

Heart Attack: Do not use Elavil if you have recently had a heart attack.

MAO Inhibitors: Do not use Elavil if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days, as it can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening reactions.

Glaucoma: Elavil can increase the pressure in the eyes and worsen glaucoma. Inform your healthcare provider if you have glaucoma or any other eye conditions.

Urinary Retention: Elavil may cause urinary retention, especially in individuals with a history of urinary tract obstruction or certain other conditions.

Seizures: Elavil should be used with caution in individuals with a history of seizures or a predisposition to seizures.

Suicidal Thoughts: Antidepressants, including Elavil, may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts, especially in children, adolescents, and young adults. Close monitoring is necessary during the initial stages of treatment.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Elavil may not be safe to use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Consult with a healthcare provider before using Elavil in these situations.
