Elavil, also known as amitriptyline, is a prescription medication that belongs to the class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of symptoms of depression. Elavil works by affecting certain chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) in the brain that help regulate mood.

The Elavil brand name has been discontinued in the U.S., but generic versions of the medication may be available.

Do's

  • Take Elavil exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.
  • Take Elavil regularly to get the most benefit from it. Take it at the same time(s) each day to help remember.
  • Start with a low dose as directed by your healthcare provider to reduce the risk of side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness, and gradually increase it as instructed.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve or worsen.
  • Be patient, as it may take up to 4 weeks before you feel the full effect of Elavil.
  • Take the medication at bedtime, if you take it only once a day, to help reduce daytime sleepiness.

Don’ts

  • Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.
  • Do not stop taking Elavil without consulting your healthcare provider. Some conditions may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped. Your healthcare provider may reduce your dose gradually to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

Elavil (amitriptyline) is an oral medication used for the treatment of depression. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your healthcare provider may occasionally change your dose. It is usually taken 1 to 4 times daily.
