This medication is part of a complete program including diet, exercise, and insulin therapy.Store at room temperature. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with this medicine and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Take with a full glass of water before breakfast if medication is to be taken once a day. If it is taken multiple times a day, take the medication with a full glass of water before meals. Swallow Tablet whole. Do not chew, crush, or split the Tablet. Do not take this medicine if you have kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, have a serious infection, illness, or injury or is needing surgery. Speak to your doctor if you have any of the above conditions, your dosage may be adjusted or you may need special monitoring while on medication.Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding; if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; if you have kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, have a serious infection, illness, or injury or is needing surgery.When taking Glucotrol XL/Glipizide XL, make sure you are aware of the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) such as headache, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, fast heartbeat, sweating, tremor or nausea. Keep some hard candies on you in case you need to treat episodes of hypoglycemia. If you are 65 years of age and older, you may experience a stronger reaction to the medication and may need to have your dose reduced. When taking Glucotrol XL/Glipizide XL, avoid drinking alcohol because the medication will lower your blood sugar and the alcohol may interfere with your diabetes treatment.Most severe: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives).Most common: blood sugar levels either too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia). When experiencing hyperglycemia you may have the following symptoms: increased thirst, hunger, and urination. When experiencing hypoglycemia you may have the following symptoms: shaking; headache; cold sweats; pale, cool skin; anxiety; and difficulty concentrating.Others: None.
