Symbicort (Budsonide/Formoterol) is a medication used to prevent bronchospasm in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. It works by reducing inflammation and relaxing muscle in the airways for better breathing.Store at room temperature. Keep away from open flames, high heat, light, moisture, children and pets. When the inhaler is not is use, keep the cover on the inhaler. It is not recommended to burn or puncture an empty inhaler canister.Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger or more frequent doses than prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication as directed on the label or by your pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare provider. If this is the first time you are using the inhaler, prime the inhaler by shaking the inhaler device and spray the inhaler 2 times into the air and away from your face to test the inhaler. Make sure you do this if you have not used it for 7 days or longer, or if the inhaler was dropped. Shake the inhaler canister for a minimum of 5 seconds before each spray. Read the instructions that came with Symbicort (Budsonide/Formoterol) for safe and effective use. If you have recently had an asthma attack, was under stress, became ill, or are having surgery your doctor may change your dose. Also, contact your doctor if your asthma medications are not working properly or as well as usual because an increased need for asthma medication may be an early sign of a serious asthma attack. Do not suddenly stop using Symbicort (Budsonide/Formoterol) because you may experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Regular doctor visits to have your eyes checked for cataract or glaucoma will be mandatory. It is important not to miss any scheduled appointments. The Symbicort (Budsonide/Formoterol) inhaler does not need to be cleaned. Do not take the inhaler apart. Discard the inhaler once the medication runs out. When there are only 10 doses left, the dose indicator will turn red. Make sure your prescription is refilled before the medication runs out completely.Do not use Symbicort (Budsonide/Formoterol) to treat an already started asthma attack because it does not work fast enough to treat the asthma attack. Do not use more than prescribed by your doctor because you may increase your risk of an asthma related death.Before taking Symbicort (Budsonide/Formoterol), inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding; are taking prescription or over the counter medication, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements; if you have any allergies to drugs; if you have diabetes, tuberculosis, a thyroid disorder, epilepsy or other seizure disorder, heart disease or high blood pressure, herpes infection of the eyes, an active infection, or a metabolic disorder such as low potassium levels in your blood.Patients using Symbicort (Budsonide/Formoterol) may also be prescribed with a combination of other asthma medications. It is important to use all your medications prescribed to you to best treat your condition. If Symbicort (Budsonide/Formoterol) is prescribed to a child, the medication can affect the child’s growth.
