Optimmune is a prescription eye ointment used to treat dogs with chronic dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis (pannus).

Optimmune contains cyclosporine, which acts as an immunosuppressant. This means it modulates the immune system's response, specifically reducing inflammation on the surface of the eye.

In KCS and pannus, the immune system mistakenly attacks the tear glands or the cornea, leading to inflammation and damage. By calming the overactive immune response, Optimmune helps create a more favorable environment for the eye to heal.

Do’s

  • Use exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. This includes frequency (usually 4 times daily), dosage, and duration of treatment.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the drops.
  • Tilt your head back and look upwards to create a pouch for the drop.
  • Apply gentle pressure to the inner corner of your eye for 1-2 minutes after installation to prevent drainage.
  • Use Optimmune before other eye medications (drops or ointments) if prescribed both.
  • Follow a consistent schedule. Use the drops at the same times each day for optimal benefit.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition worsens or doesn't improve.
  • Discard single-use containers after use. Don't reuse them.

Don'ts

  • Don't touch the dropper tip or let it come into contact with your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
  • Don't wear contact lenses while using Optimmune unless your healthcare provider specifically approves it.
  • Don't rinse the dropper after use.
  • Don't rub your eye after applying the drops.
  • Don't stop using Optimmune without consulting your healthcare provider.
