NexGard is indicated for the following:

  1. Treatment and prevention of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides sp.) in dogs.
  2. Control of paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus), Brown Dog Tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), and Bush ticks (Haemaphysalis longicornis) in dogs.
  3. Prevention of Borrelia burgdorferi infections (causing Lyme disease) as a result of killing Ixodes scapularis vector ticks.

The active ingredient in NexGard is afoxolaner, which is a parasite neurotoxin that works by interfering with the transmission of impulses along the parasites' nervous system, causing paralysis and death of the parasite.

Do’s

  • NexGard is dosed for dogs by weight. Use the correct-sized medication for your pet.
  • Weigh your dog regularly to ensure that you are using the correct product size.
  • NexGard is given once a month by mouth in dogs weighing 4 pounds or more and 8 weeks of age or older. It can be administered with or without food.
  • If the dog vomits the medication within two hours of administration, re-dose with another full chew.
  • If a dose is missed, it should be administered when remembered, and then resume a monthly dosing schedule. It is normal to see fleas temporarily if a dose has been missed for a long period of time
  • Care should be taken to ensure that the dog consumes the complete chew, and treated dogs should be observed for a few minutes after administration to ensure that no part of the chew is lost or rejected. If it is suspected that any of the chew has been lost, it is recommended to treat again with another full chew.
  • Follow the directions on the drug label or as provided by your veterinarian for the safe and effective use of NexGard.

Don’ts

  • Do not give extra or double doses.
  • Vomiting
  • Itching
  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhea
  • Lack of Appetite
  • Seizures

While these side effects have been reported, they are generally self-limiting and of short duration. If your dog experiences any unexpected reactions after taking NexGard, consult a veterinarian for guidance and appropriate action.

Afoxolaner, the active ingredient in NexGard, belongs to a class associated with neurologic adverse reactions, including tremors, ataxia, and seizures. Seizures have been reported in dogs receiving isoxazoline-class drugs, even in dogs without a history of seizures. Therefore, it is recommended to use NexGard with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders.

The safe use of NexGard in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. Consult with a veterinarian before administering NexGard to dogs in these conditions.

Consult with a veterinarian for specific concerns about the use of NexGard in your dog, as they can provide tailored advice based on your pet's individual health status and potential risk factors.
