Jardiance is a prescription medication that helps with the following:
- It lowers the risk of death from heart disease and hospital visits for adults with heart failure when the heart isn't pumping enough blood.
- Jardiance reduces the risk of death from heart disease in adults with type 2 diabetes who also have heart problems.
- It helps lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes when combined with a healthy diet and exercise.
Who should not take Jardiance?
- People with type 1 diabetes should not take Jardiance because it may increase the risk of a serious condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (high ketones in blood or urine).
- It is not meant for adults with severe kidney problems because it may not work properly.
- It is unclear if Jardiance is safe or effective for children.
What are the ingredients in Jardiance?
Active ingredient: empagliflozin Inactive ingredients: lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, colloidal silicon dioxide and magnesium stearate. In addition, the film coating contains the following inactive ingredients: hypromellose, titanium dioxide, talc, polyethylene glycol, and yellow ferric oxide.- Take Jardiance exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to take it.
- Take it by mouth 1 time in the morning each day, with or without food.
- Your healthcare provider may change your dose if needed.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule.
- Your healthcare provider may tell you to take Jardiance along with other diabetes medicines. Low blood sugar can happen more often when Jardiance is taken with certain other diabetes medicines.
- If you take too much, call your healthcare provider or go to the nearest hospital emergency room right away.
- Do not take two doses of Jardiance at the same time. Talk with your healthcare provider if you have questions about a missed dose.
- Jardiance can cause intravascular volume contraction and may lead to renal impairment. There have been reports of acute kidney injury, some requiring hospitalization and dialysis, in patients receiving SGLT2 inhibitors, including Jardiance.
- Patients should be assessed for signs and symptoms of metabolic acidosis for ketoacidosis, regardless of blood glucose level. Before initiating, consider risk factors for ketoacidosis. Patients on Jardiance may require monitoring and temporary discontinuation of therapy in clinical situations known to predispose to ketoacidosis.
- Symptomatic hypotension may occur with this drug, and patients should be advised to maintain adequate fluid intake to reduce the risk of hypotension.
- may lead to serious genital infections, such as necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum. Patients should promptly seek medical attention if they develop symptoms such as pain or tenderness, redness, or swelling of the genitals or the area from the genitals back to the rectum, along with a fever above 100.4°F or malaise.
- Jardiance may interact with other medications, such as diuretics, potentially affecting blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Discuss potential interactions with a healthcare provider.
- Jardiance is not suitable for individuals with severe or end-stage kidney disease, those on dialysis, or those with known hypersensitivity to empagliflozin. It is also not recommended for use in patients with Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Consult a healthcare provider for personalized advice and to thoroughly discuss any potential risks or concerns before starting Jardiance.
